Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jose Edmundo Vieira! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Bayarmandakh Bayasgalan! The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Chad Campbell and Franklyn Lucas.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vieira misses with a two punch combination.
Bayasgalan swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Bayasgalan moves out of range of the strikes. Vieira shoots for a double leg takedown but Bayasgalan sprawls well. He's pushed Vieira's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Vieira shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bayasgalan but Bayasgalan pushes him off and we're back to square one. Bayasgalan lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected. Vieira tries to clinch up and Bayasgalan counters with a three punch combo that has Vieira backing up. Vieira nods at Bayasgalan to acknowledge the strikes. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Vieira shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Bayasgalan counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Bayasgalan. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jose Edmundo Vieira. That's going to take a lot out of him. Bayasgalan has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Vieira regains guard immediately. Vieira not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bayasgalan not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. It looks like Bayasgalan might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Bayasgalan is in close to Vieira's body, working some short punches and elbows. Bayasgalan trying to control but Vieira is working from the bottom. Bayasgalan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Vieira. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Bayasgalan connects with a couple of short punches.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Bayasgalan is looking to work some ground and pound but Vieira has wrist control. Vieira avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Vieira tries to keep at a distance but Bayasgalan has taken the fight into the clinch. Bayasgalan tries to pull guard but Vieira forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Bayasgalan is struggling to control the position. Vieira is fighting off a takedown attempt but Bayasgalan is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Vieira to the mat. Vieira regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat. Vieira is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Vieira can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Bayasgalan controls the pace.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Vieira trying to control the position here. Vieira wants to stand but Bayasgalan is controlling the position. Bayasgalan is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Bayasgalan must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Vieira trying to keep a closed guard but Bayasgalan is proving a slippery customer.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Vieira had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Bayasgalan defends it easily. Bayasgalan postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Bayasgalan is sitting in close to Vieira's body. Vieira has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Bayasgalan is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Bayasgalan is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Vieira.
