Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Simppa Koivu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pedro Romero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Koivu might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Omnium gatherum - The Return. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Pedro Romero was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Simppa Koivu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Pedro Romero!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Steve Montenegro and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Koivu misses with a body shot.
Romero looks to land a right hand but Koivu moved out of range.
Koivu lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
No joy there for Koivu, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Romero throws a right hand that Koivu ducks under and follows up with a left that Koivu also avoids with ease.
Koivu digs a good body shot into Romero's ribs.
Pedro Romero seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Romero tries to move into range but Koivu moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.


It looks like Pedro Romero has been cut.
Romero looks gassed!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Romero keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Romero throws a nice looking combination but Koivu bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Koivu clinches.
Koivu tries to work over Romero's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Romero as Koivu tries to tie him up.
Maybe Koivu would be better served going for some more strikes rather than trying to control so much.
Koivu tries to throw a body punch but Romero avoids it by throwing Koivu back against the cage.
Koivu wants a takedown but no success here.
Romero is looking to break free of the clinch but Koivu has double underhooks.
Romero is trying to break the clinch but Koivu has him pressed against the cage.

Koivu drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Koivu lands a nice uppercut.
Romero wants to break the clinch but can't.
Koivu lands a body punch in the clinch.
Koivu fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Romero has had enough of the clinch but Koivu keeps him there for the moment.
Koivu misses with the head strike.
Koivu stalling.
Koivu struggles to land a body shot inside as Romero controls his hands.
Romero wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Romero is looking to break free of the clinch but Koivu has double underhooks.
Koivu swings wildly with an uppercut but Romero uses good head movement to avoid it.
Romero wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Koivu has him pressed against the cage.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Koivu pushes Romero back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Koivu misses with a punch to the body.
A shot in the inside from Koivu.
Koivu lands a nice shot to the body.
Nice body punch from Koivu - that landed with a thud.

Koivu displaying some good clinch control by pressing Romero up against the cage.
Koivu jumps guard but Romero stands there with Koivu around his waist. Koivu gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Koivu lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Romero backwards.
Romero is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Koivu pulls Romero into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Koivu not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Koivu working for a triangle but Romero defends it easily.
Koivu will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Koivu looking for subs off his back but Romero has passed one foot through into half guard.
Romero really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Koivu. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Koivu has hold of a guillotine but he's not going to be able to crank on it really with only half guard, so it's no trouble for Romero. Oh but Koivu has got full guard now! Oh boy! This one could be over very soon! Romero goes limp - he's gone! Koivu jumps up and celebrates with the crowd - fantastic submission finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:28 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Simppa Koivu!
