Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Thomas Schubert! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ari Baba! The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Paulsen Ambrosius and Nard Betker.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Baba gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Schubert to score an easy takedown into full guard. Schubert stops Baba from standing up. Schubert is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Baba looking to control but Schubert passes into half guard.
Baba really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Schubert. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Baba wants to control but Schubert is keeping busy and won't allow it. Schubert working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Baba's thigh. Baba counters though and makes it back to full guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Schubert slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Baba controls Schubert momentarily but Schubert frees himself.
That's one minute gone in the round. Baba wants to sweep but no luck. Schubert advances position into side control! Schubert goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Baba has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Schubert but great work by Baba. Schubert sneaks back into half guard. Schubert moves into full guard.
Schubert tries to land a sweep but no joy. Schubert has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Baba missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Schubert pushes a forearm under Baba's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Baba is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Thomas Schubert! A relieved looking Thomas Schubert thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
