PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jah Wobble (ranked 787 p4p, 102 weight class) and Thomas Maeda (ranked 1353 p4p, 161 weight class). Wobble comes into the arena with Jimmy Barnes - Working Class Man blaring out of the sound system. Maeda has chosen Submission as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
18 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jah Wobble! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
19 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Thomas Maeda! The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Chris Edwards and Paul Tew.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice uppercut lands for Maeda. That snapped Wobble's head back.
Maeda throws a right and a left that Wobble avoids nicely. Wobble steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Maeda. Wobble changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Wobble misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Maeda.
Wobble takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Maeda connects with a right hand. Wobble shakes it off. Maeda will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Wobble drops down looking for a counter takedown but Maeda sprawls and moves away. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Wobble stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Wobble wants it to stay on the feet. Maeda misses with an uppercut
and Wobble counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Maeda!
That's one minute gone in the round. Maeda is looking for a sweep. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Wobble trying to control the action but Maeda is working from the bottom. Wobble landing a few strikes. Maeda is pushing Wobble's head away, looking to escape. Wobble manages to hold on to the position though. Maeda tries to get back to half guard but can't. Wobble lands a decent elbow from side control. Wobble cracks Maeda with a big right hand but Maeda just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Maeda is looking to regain half guard here but Wobble keeps moving and retains side control. Wobble working away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wobble is staying tight to Maeda's torso, preventing him from escaping. Maeda wants to control but Wobble postures up. Wobble tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Wobble has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Wobble goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Maeda has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Wobble but great work by Maeda. Wobble manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Maeda looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Wobble trying to control the position here. Wobble's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Wobble bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Maeda's guard. Wobble looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Wobble is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Kombat Hangar 18 that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet. Maeda is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Wobble is aware though and is defending well. Maeda looking to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Wobble wants to control from the top but Maeda keeps moving. Wobble trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Wobble in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Wobble loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Wobble looking to pass the guard. Maeda not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Wobble throws a big elbow that misses. Wobble wants to pass the guard but Maeda is keeping the position. Maeda trying to control the position.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Wobble works over Maeda with some ground and pound from guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wobble steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Maeda. Wobble tries to counter by clinching up but Maeda breaks away and moves out of range. Maeda lands with a shot to the body. Maeda misses with a takedown attempt - Wobble sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Wobble wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch. Maeda keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Wobble. A little jabbing left from Maeda on the counter but it doesn't find it's target. Wobble on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.

That's one minute gone in the round. Maeda throws a hook to the side of Wobble's head but Wobble sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Maeda misses the body punch and Wobble counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Wobble. Wobble stopping the sweep attempt from Maeda. Wobble landing some decent shots from guard. Maeda is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Wobble is aware though and is defending well. Maeda is trying to control the position but Wobble postures up. Wobble trying to control but Maeda is working from the bottom. Wobble with a nice head shot there. Our spies down at at Roosters Coop inform us that Maeda has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off? Wobble seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Wobble works over Maeda with some ground and pound from guard. Jah Wobble overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Maeda had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Wobble defends it easily. Wobble looking to sit in guard and control but Maeda gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Wobble working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Maeda doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Maeda manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Maeda lands a couple of decent looking shots. Maeda stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Wobble swivels though and keeps the full guard. Wobble manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Maeda manages to get himself to full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Maeda looking to hit a scissor sweep but Wobble is one step ahead there. Wobble wants to control from the top but Maeda keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Maeda looking for a guillotine here but Wobble defends easily.
Wobble stands up over Maeda, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Wobble won't allow Maeda to sweep him here. Wobble stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maeda swivels though and keeps the full guard. Wobble looking to control the position here, rather than advance. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Wobble is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Jah Wobble will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!
Maeda stuns Wobble with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. A solid body kick from Wobble. Maeda connects with a jab. Maeda uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Wobble.

That's one minute gone in the round. Wobble lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Wobble postures up and lands a big shot to Maeda's brow. Wobble lands a couple of digs. Maeda trying to keep a closed guard but Wobble is proving a slippery customer.
Wobble is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Wobble is in close to Maeda's body, working some short punches and elbows. Wobble is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Maeda can do to turn this around? Wobble's corner is telling him to maintain position. Wobble trying to control but Maeda is working from the bottom. Wobble showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Maeda looking for a sweep. Not yet Maeda, not yet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Maeda looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Wobble is defending well. Maeda quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Wobble has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Maeda celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
