The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rios fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Black looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! A head kick misses from Rios. Rios shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Rios showed some decent athleticism there. Rios tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Black. Black tries to get to full guard but Rios has control of the leg. Rios wants to stand up but Black has a hold of him and won't allow it. Black flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rios tries to stand and escape but Black is controlling the position. Black strikes from the bottom but Rios uses the opportunity to move to side control.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Rios bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Black's head. Black tries to bum rush Rios with a series of wild strikes but Rios uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Rios feints and as Black raises his hands in defense, Rios changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Rios wants to stand but Black is controlling his posture from full guard. Rios gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. A punch combination from Rios misses. Black connects with a nice looking jab.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Black fails in his attempt to clinch. Rios lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Black swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Rios tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Black feints and as Rios raises his hands in defense, Black changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Black thows a big elbow that misses. Black throwing strikes from guard but Rios blocks nicely. Black postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Black working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Rios's head. Black postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Black throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Black postures up in Rios's guard and throws a big left but Rios blocks it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Black throws and elbow that misses. Rios uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Black's guard. Nice move by Rios! Black has a closed guard, preventing Rios from standing up. Black trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Black doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Black shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rios pinned against the cage. Rios gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Rios throws a right and a left that both miss. Black shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Rios as he avoids it easily. Rios closes the distance and clinches. Rios breaks the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Black has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Black throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

Alex Rios dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Rios shoots in for a takedown but Black shows good takedown defense. Rios moves into the clinch. Rios drops down looking for an ankle pick but Black pulls his leg out and moves away.
Rios throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Black. Rios throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Rios misses with a two punch combination.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Rios wants a takedown but no success here.

That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Rios takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. Rios lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Rios. Rios has closed the distance and engaged Black in a clinch.

Black winds up and cracks Rios with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Brian Black. I think Black has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
