PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Chew Backer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ernie Alvin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alvin has chosen Ragga Clash as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Chew Backer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ernie Alvin!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Donatello Bradman and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alvin feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Alvin distracts Backer with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Alvin trying to control but Backer is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Backer has a closed guard, preventing Alvin from standing up.
Alvin has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Alvin throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Backer works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Alvin trying to control the position from guard on top but Backer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Alvin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Backer swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Alvin is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Backer shoots for a double leg takedown but Alvin sprawls well. He's pushed Backer's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Backer instigates a clinch.
Alvin is trying to break free.
Alvin is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

That's one minute gone in the round.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Alvin.
Alvin jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Backer walks away with a smile on his face. Alvin gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Backer tries for a takedown but Alvin circles away easily

and Alvin counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Alvin won't allow Backer to sweep him here.
Alvin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Backer swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Backer is looking for a triangle but Alvin pushes his legs off easily.
Alvin is looking to stand up but Backer won't let him.
Alvin is pushing down on Backer's leg trying to pass to half guard. Backer is fighting to maintain full guard but Alvin has managed to sneak the leg through.
Alvin looks gassed!

That's two minutes gone in the round.

The fighters are battling for position here. Backer manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Backer will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Backer is looking for a triangle but Alvin pushes his legs off easily.

Alvin is looking for a kimura but Backer is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Alvin to get the leverage.
Backer manages to get to full guard.

Alvin stands and steps away. Backer gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Alvin swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Alvin tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Backer closes the distance looking to clinch

and Alvin counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Alvin avoiding damage as Backer throws knees to the body.
Backer is pressed up against the cage. Alvin has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Backer down to the mat. Backer avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Backer scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Alvin closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Alvin lands in his opponent's guard.
Backer is controlling Alvin's posture.

Alvin wants to control from the top but Backer keeps moving.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ernie Alvin dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Alvin throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Backer's waist but Backer gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Alvin off to one side.
Backer shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Alvin counters by moving into the clinch.
Alvin tries to pull guard but Backer won't allow it.
Backer tries for a takedown but Alvin manages to get underhooks.
Alvin tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Chew Backer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ernie Alvin.

Alvin is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Backer gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Backer throws an elbow but it misses.
Alvin manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Alvin escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Alvin shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Backer but Backer pushes him off and we're back to square one.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Alvin misses with a two punch combination.
Backer tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Alvin moves into the clinch.

Alvin breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Alvin stuffs the takedown.

Backer closes the distance and clinches.
Alvin managing to block the knees to the body from Backer.
Backer gets underhooks to prevent Alvin's takedown attempt.
Alvin gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Backer.
Backer landing some nice looking knees to the body.

Alvin turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Backer tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Alvin wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Backer is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Alvin stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Chew Backer is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Backer looks to land a combination but Alvin avoids it well.
Backer throws a head kick that misses.

Alvin closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Backer to the mat! Backer manages to get full guard.
Backer keeping moving, preventing Alvin from controlling successfully.
Alvin wanted to stand there but Backer had control of the position.
Alvin trying to control the position from guard on top but Backer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Backer thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Backer wants to sweep but no luck.
Backer is trying to keep Alvin in close.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Backer looks to clinch

and Alvin counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Alvin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Backer keeps working.
Alvin winds up and cracks Backer with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Alvin stalling.
Ernie Alvin has got the better of the ground game so far.
Backer won't allow Alvin to pass to mount.
Alvin scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Backer wants to control but Alvin is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Alvin wants to control but Backer is keeping him busy.

Alvin looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Alvin tries to clinch up but Backer circles away and keeps his distance.
Alvin feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Backer's calf.
Alvin misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Backer drives through and clinches with Alvin against the cage.
Knees to the body from Backer.
Backer comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ernie Alvin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Backer tries to clinch but Alvin moves out of range.
Backer closes the distance but Alvin moves to the side

and Alvin counters with a takedown into side control.
Backer is looking for a sweep.
Backer gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Alvin is working to isolate an arm here. It's a telegraphed submission attempt but he's gone for it anyway - and he's got it! Alvin extends the arm and Backer is forced to tap!
