Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Bert River (ranked 23609 p4p, 543 weight class) and George Backman (ranked 4239 p4p, 370 weight class). George Backman told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, George Backman!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Aleksandr Martynov and Sergei Dronov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Backman throws a lazy uppercut
and River counters with a low kick, right behind Backman 's knee.
Backman circles away from the clinch attempt.
River thows a left - swing and a miss!
River misses with a low kick.
River throws a nice outside leg kick.
Backman is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Jab, jab by Backman - just one landing.
Backman throws a good cross that connects.
George Backman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
River's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Backman connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! River scrambles back to his feet.
River throws a solid leg kick but Backman takes the impact on his shin and smiles at River.
River has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Backman finds it's way round the side to connect with River's head.
It looks like Bert River has been cut.
A solid leg kick lands there for River.
River dodges the punch combination from Backman.
Backman just misses with a punch to the body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
River walks into a jab.

Backman throws a low kick, looking for River's leg but River calmly moves out of range.
River lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
River takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

River avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

River looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
That kick from River tenderised Backman's leg. Backman is trying to keep his angry face on.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Backman trying to control the position but instead, River has worked for underhooks and has pushed Backman into the cage.
River misses with a shot to the kidneys.

River ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. River no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
River keeping moving, preventing Backman from controlling successfully.
River has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Backman can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Backman slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

River working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Backman doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but River is tightening it up a little... Backman has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Backman reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Backman taps out! Nice BJJ there by River!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:25 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Bert River!
Bert River was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
