PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alejandro Scott (ranked 587 p4p, 87 weight class) and Sam McCullen (ranked 1027 p4p, 149 weight class). Scott comes to the cage accompanied by Alejandro - Lady Gaga. McCullen has chosen The Foggy Dew as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Alejandro Scott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 18 - 1, fighting out of London, Sam McCullen!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Frank Dennis and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McCullen moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Scott seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Scott missing with a left hand there. McCullen was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
McCullen throws a body shot but no joy.
McCullen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
McCullen lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
McCullen has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
McCullen throws a body punch but Scott moves out of range.
McCullen throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
McCullen throws a body kick that misses.
Scott goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.


It looks like Sam McCullen has been cut.
Scott is looking to score with low kicks.
Scott missing with a left hand there. McCullen was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Scott takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
McCullen ducks under a wild hook from Scott.
The fighters circling - McCullen throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Scott was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Scott stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from McCullen.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
McCullen throws a body kick that misses.
Scott ducks under a wild hook from McCullen.

Scott throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around McCullen's waist but McCullen gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Scott off to one side.

Scott loads up on a big right hand but McCullen slips the punch.
McCullen appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
McCullen throws a hook to the side of Scott's head but Scott sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Scott attempts a counter takedown but McCullen avoids it well and moves away.
McCullen throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Scott sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Scott closes the distance and clinches up with McCullen, looking for a takedown. Scott pushes McCullen against the cage but McCullen circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
McCullen looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Scott shoots in looking for a takedown. McCullen tries to sprawl out of it but Scott keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. McCullen manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alejandro Scott. That's going to take a lot out of him.
McCullen dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

McCullen throws a good cross that connects.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
McCullen lands with a good body shot.
Scott pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

and Scott counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for McCullen!

Scott is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but McCullen is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McCullen is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

McCullen is holding Scott down, trying to stall.

Scott swings around for an armbar but McCullen sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Scott's guard.

Scott wants to control but McCullen is keeping busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

and Scott makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
McCullen looks to score with a jab to the body but Scott is just out of range.
Scott scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
McCullen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

and McCullen counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

McCullen gets caught napping as Scott dives in and scores a takedown. McCullen manages to retain guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McCullen is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Scott drops back, looking for a kneebar! McCullen looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. McCullen looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from McCullen!

Scott tries to reverse the position but McCullen maintains control.

Scott holds on for dear life.
Scott regains half guard.
Scott gets full guard.
Scott is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Scott is keen to just control but McCullen is a slippery customer.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Scott is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so McCullen is just riding it out for now. Scott eventually gives up the hold.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

McCullen takes a little break here. Scott wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

That was a close second round but I would say that Alejandro Scott will probably get the nod.

McCullen is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Scott.
McCullen throws a chopping leg kick but Scott manages to avoid taking any serious damage.

Scott closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Scott lands in his opponent's guard.
McCullen wants to sweep but no luck.

McCullen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Scott wants to hit a sweep here but McCullen passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Scott there!
Scott is looking to improve his position but McCullen isn't that keen on the idea.

Scott tries to lock up and control but McCullen gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Sam McCullen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well McCullen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
