Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rob Gross!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
19 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, James Smith!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Sergei Dronov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gross throws a series of punches but Smith avoids them all with ease.
A swing and a miss from Smith.
Gross swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Smith closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Smith lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Gross tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Gross has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith cracks Gross with a big right hand but Gross just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Smith gets to mount! Gross was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Smith prevents Gross from getting the reversal.
This has been an exciting period of action!
That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Smith scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Gross?
Gross is rocked!
Gross really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Smith has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Smith pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Oh Gross is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Smith is landing with some decent strikes but Gross is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Oooh a big shot lands for Smith! Gross is out! The ref dives in to save him from more punishment!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). James Smith!
