PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Darian Cruz (ranked 2273 p4p, 241 weight class) and Lewis Burwell Puller (ranked 2195 p4p, 237 weight class). Cruz comes to the cage accompanied by System Of A Down - Aerials . These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Darian Cruz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lewis Burwell Puller!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Konstantin Menshow and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Puller misses with a hook. Cruz ducked under it nicely.
Puller looks to land a left hand but Cruz moved out of range nicely.
Cruz uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Puller.
Cruz attempts a counter takedown but Puller avoids it well and moves away.
Cruz bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Cruz dives in and grabs Puller's left leg, looking for a takedown. Puller pushes down on Cruz's head and hops out.
Puller throws out a counter right but Cruz avoids it with no problem.
Cruz shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Puller pinned against the cage. Puller gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

and Puller counters with a stiff right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darian Cruz. That's going to take a lot out of him.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Puller throws a body shot but no joy.
Puller fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Cruz looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Puller lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Puller has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Puller moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Cruz has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Cruz wants to free his trapped foot but Puller is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Cruz is trying to control. Puller wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Cruz wants to pass the guard but Puller is defending well.
Cruz works his way into side control.
Puller is not content to let Cruz control the position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Cruz is keen to just control but Puller is a slippery customer.
Cruz not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Cruz is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Puller sees it coming and defends easily.
Cruz thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Cruz is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Puller defends it well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cruz thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Puller's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cruz looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Puller is fending him off so far but Cruz persists. Nope, Puller circles away and we're back to standing.
Puller throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Puller cracks Cruz with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Puller tries to keep at a distance but Cruz has taken the fight into the clinch.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Puller. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Cruz has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Puller after a bit of a struggle.

I was talking to Cruz's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Puller throws a head punch that misses.

Cruz has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Puller uses from the top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Puller stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Puller wants it to stay on the feet.
Puller lands a nice hook to Cruz's body. Cruz takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Cruz is defended easily by Puller.
Cruz shoots in for a takedown but Puller shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Cruz is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Puller scores with a nice right hand.


Cruz is rocked!
Cruz switches off momentarily and Puller cracks him with a monster right hand! Cruz topples backwards and makes a semi conscious attempt to cover up, as Puller dives in to land one more shot, before the referee has time to call the fight. What a finish by Puller!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Lewis Burwell Puller!
A very excited looking Lewis Burwell Puller made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
The defeated Darian Cruz had this to say: 'Great to see this man back! It's pretty easy decision if you ask us.'.
