Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Jorge Galvao! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Nate Masvidal! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Alexandre Firmino and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Masvidal lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Nice cross by Masvidal. Galvao with a poor takedown and Masvidal counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Galvao doesn't succeed with the takedown and Masvidal counters with a stiff right hand. Galvao shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Galvao was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Masvidal tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Galvao wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Galvao wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Masvidal, who protects the arm well. Masvidal is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Galvao off and has taken his back! Masvidal is hanging on to Galvao's back as he tries to escape.
Galvao is keeping busy.
Good control from Masvidal. You can see the frustration on Galvao's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
That's one minute gone in the round. Masvidal avoiding Galvao 's attempts to control his hands. Masvidal wants to control the position but Galvao frees himself and scrambles - Masvidal manages to regain control in side control.
My spies in Shut Up & Train! {$1000} inform me that Masvidal has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Masvidal controlling the position. Galvao wants to control but Masvidal postures up. Galvao tries to buck Masvidal off but Masvidal is having none of it. Galvao is working hard here to advance position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Masvidal moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. Galvao is looking to regain half guard here but Masvidal keeps moving and retains side control. Both fighters take a look at the clock. Masvidal trying to control the action but Galvao is working from the bottom. Galvao is trying to improve his position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Galvao manages to work his way to half guard, despite Masvidal's best efforts. Masvidal is controlling the pace.
Masvidal is looking to stall in half guard but Galvao is in no mood to hang around. He's locked up a Kimura from the bottom and has used it to sweep! He's held on to the kimura and is looking to finish here... will he get it... YES! Masvidal taps out and the crowd goes crazy! Great finish!
