Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
14 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gaia Ky Jr! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
21 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dulles Bush! The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Taro Takaoka and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ky Jr looks to throw the jab but Bush is out of range. Bush looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Ky Jr ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Ky Jr checks the leg kick. Bush is looking to take this fight into the clinch. A jab from Bush misses. Bush digs a good hook to Ky Jr's body.
Ky Jr moves into the clinch. Bush working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely. Bush swings wildly with an uppercut but Ky Jr uses good head movement to avoid it. Good anti-grappling being displayed by Bush as Ky Jr tries to tie him up. I was talking to Ky Jr's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bush breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Bush keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Ky Jr missing with a left hand there. Bush was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Bush is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Ky Jr.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ky Jr closes the distance and clinches up with Bush, looking for a takedown. Ky Jr pushes Bush against the ropes but Bush circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Bush uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Ky Jr.
A good leg kick by Bush. Ky Jr gets a takedown into half guard. Bush manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Ky Jr keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the ropes. Ky Jr is working for takedown but Bush is calmly controlling the position for now. Bush misses with some punches.
Bush goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Ky Jr really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Bush throws a punch but it's blocked by Ky Jr. Bush lands with a short shot to the head. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Bush breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Bush throws a leg kick and Ky Jr counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Ky Jr is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Ky Jr is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Bush is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Gaia Ky Jr! Gaia Ky Jr is the new featherweight champion! Gaia Ky Jr was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
