Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Harold Kerzner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Popeye! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Hugh Johnson and Ron Honeybunn.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kerzner rushes Popeye and presses him up against the cage. Kerzner tries to pull guard but Popeye won't allow it.
Kerzner has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Popeye uses from the top position. Popeye has gone for a leg lock! Kerzner slips out almost immediately though and dives into Popeye's guard.
Popeye really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kerzner. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Popeye can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Kerzner controls the pace. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kerzner wants to control from the top but Popeye keeps moving. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kerzner is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Kerzner wants to control from the top but Popeye keeps moving.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kerzner works a leg free and moves into half guard. Kerzner trying to control the action but Popeye is working from the bottom. Popeye won't allow Kerzner to pass to mount. Popeye tries to get to full guard but Kerzner has control of the leg. Kerzner seems to be looking for submissions.
Kerzner content to control rather than advance.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Popeye is staying active underneath Kerzner, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Kerzner is really struggling to control Popeye but he's trying to hold on to the position. Popeye looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Kerzner is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Kerzner is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Popeye is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Popeye regains full guard. Nicely done. Popeye is trying to control the position but Kerzner postures up. Kerzner passes Popeye's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Popeye tries to roll over but Kerzner keeps him under control. Kerzner is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Kerzner has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Kerzner in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Popeye tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Kerzner!
