PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Teshima Shigochiyo (ranked 1336 p4p, 1960 weight class) and Sonny Gilchrist (ranked 162 p4p, 220 weight class). Shigochiyo comes to the cage accompanied by Yoshida Brothers - Rising. Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Teshima Shigochiyo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sonny Gilchrist!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, William Peck and Robert Douchet.





The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gilchrist shoots in for a takedown but Shigochiyo shows good takedown defense.
Gilchrist shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Shigochiyo but Shigochiyo pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Gilchrist dives in for a single leg takedown but Shigochiyo sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Teshima Shigochiyo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sonny Gilchrist.
Shigochiyo swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Gilchrist is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shigochiyo shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Gilchrist's guard.
Shigochiyo wants to control from the top but Gilchrist keeps moving.

Gilchrist has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Shigochiyo can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gilchrist looks to move to half guard but instead Shigochiyo has passed into mount! Damn!

Shigochiyo is trying to work for a kimura but Gilchrist is defending well.

Shigochiyo seems to be looking for submissions.

Gilchrist is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Shigochiyo pulls his head out easily.

Shigochiyo is looking to take a break and control but Gilchrist is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gilchrist seems a little lost for a moment, as Shigochiyo dominates the positioning.
Gilchrist manages to get back to half guard.

Shigochiyo is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Gilchrist has managed to free his arm - good work.

Shigochiyo seems to be working for a kimura but Gilchrist defends the submission attempt.
Gilchrist is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Shigochiyo wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gilchrist keeps working.

Gilchrist looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Shigochiyo pushes past his half guard into mount!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shigochiyo avoids the attempt from Gilchrist to control.
Gilchrist has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

Shigochiyo swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Gilchrist is now in Shigochiyo's guard. A big mistake from Shigochiyo there, giving up the dominant position!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shigochiyo wants to free his trapped foot but Gilchrist is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Shigochiyo is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Gilchrist has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Shigochiyo is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gilchrist can do to turn this around?

Shigochiyo can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Gilchrist is looking to escape.

Teshima Shigochiyo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Shigochiyo looking to control but Gilchrist is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Gilchrist sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Shigochiyo seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Gilchrist does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Gilchrist is pressing down on Shigochiyo's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Still in half guard, Shigochiyo seems content to control.

Shigochiyo is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gilchrist is just riding it out for now. Shigochiyo eventually gives up the hold.

Teshima Shigochiyo dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



A momentary lapse in concentration from Gilchrist enables Shigochiyo to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gilchrist manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Gilchrist working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shigochiyo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shigochiyo manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Shigochiyo drops back looking for a leg! Gilchrist is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Gilchrist manages to kick Shigochiyo off! Shigochiyo jumps back into Gilchrist's guard.

Gilchrist takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Shigochiyo is looking to take a break and control but Gilchrist is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gilchrist wants to get back to full guard.

Gilchrist is squirming around, avoiding Shigochiyo's attempts to control the action.

Shigochiyo is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Gilchrist to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Gilchrist shrugs it off.

Shigochiyo is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gilchrist doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Shigochiyo.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Shigochiyo is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gilchrist defends it well.

Teshima Shigochiyo showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Shigochiyo has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
