PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight kickboxing rules bout between Don Cartagena (ranked 19530 p4p, 24069 weight class) and Takeru Ishii (ranked 581 p4p, 570 weight class). Cartagena's entrance music is The Crack Attack. A fine choice. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Don Cartagena! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 14 - 17 - 2, fighting out of Las Vegas, Takeru Ishii! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Sosuke Kotani.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ishii tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Cartagena is able to avoid easily. Ishii tries to clinch there but Cartagena circles away.
Ishii throws a shot to the body.
Ishii ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. A slow jab from Cartagena misses its intended target. Ishii loads up on a big right hand but Cartagena slips the punch. Ishii misses with a hook. Cartagena ducked under it nicely. Ishii wants to clinch. Cartagena lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ishii misses with a combination
and Cartagena counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Ishii ducks under a wild hook from Cartagena. The crowd cheers as Cartagena lands an impressive looking overhand right. Ishii doesn't seem phased though. Cartagena misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Cartagena blocks a jab. Cartagena checks a leg kick nicely. Cartagena throws a jab but it's blocked by Ishii. Ishii wants to counter the offense by Cartagena and move into the clinch position. Ishii walks straight into devastating uppercut and drops to the floor, clearly wobbled! Can he beat the count? 4,5,6,7... he's up! And he's down again! The ref steps in and calls an end to the fight! What a punch that was!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:19 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punch). Don Cartagena! Don Cartagena was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
