The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Colin Fotheringham and James Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Place avoids a punch combination nicely.
newton shoots for a double leg takedown but Place sprawls well. He's pushed newton's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Place thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed newton's head.

Place is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but newton is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Place is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. newton knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Place tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Place has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

newton shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Place manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Place looking for submissions off his back.
newton is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Place doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time newton.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Place working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. newton doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. newton manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Place had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. newton is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Place Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take newton's back instead.
Place working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
newton really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Place. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

newton sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Place's guard.
Place is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but newton pulls his head out easily.
newton is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

newton rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Place moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Horrible takedown by Place or perhaps it was just good defense by newton which made him look bad.
newton looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
newton throws a sloppy head kick
and newton takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
newton gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Place won't allow newton to sweep him here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
newton wants to stand and escape. He's got his foot on Place's hips, looking to push off. But Place grabs a hold of the leg and drops back for an ankle lock! It's hard to tell if he's got it. Both fighters look composed - OH, not anymore they don't! newton screams like a kid who's trapped his fingers in the car door and taps out! Yikes, that must have hurt - hopefully it's not snapped anything!
