CACC 104 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the middleweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 15 wins and 12 losses; Vito Mazzini! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 6 losses; DJ Augustus ! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, William Peck and Yves DeLean.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Mazzini bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Mazzini (4) vs (0) Augustus Augustus sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Augustus is looking for a sweep. Mazzini is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Augustus is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Mazzini jumps into side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Mazzini (7) vs (0) Augustus Mazzini working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Augustus manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Mazzini trying to mount his opponent but Augustus defends it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Augustus is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Augustus trying to hold on to Mazzini's head to control him but Mazzini postures up.
Augustus felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Mazzini is looking to advance position but Augustus won't allow it. Augustus is trying to control but Mazzini manages to pass to mount!

Augustus gets back to half guard. Augustus is looking to control Mazzini's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Augustus avoid being mounted? The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Augustus is pressing down on Mazzini's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Augustus wants to sweep here but Mazzini controlling him for the moment. Mazzini is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Augustus tries to land a sweep but no joy. Augustus keeping full guard, as Mazzini tries to pass. Augustus can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Mazzini controls the pace. Mazzini trying to control the position from guard on top but Augustus is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Augustus is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Augustus working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mazzini doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Augustus is tightening it up a little... Mazzini has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Mazzini reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Mazzini taps out! Nice BJJ there by Augustus !
