PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zuillnic Canto (ranked 3111 p4p, 2724 weight class) and Tua Taamu (ranked 412 p4p, 365 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Zuillnic Canto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tua Taamu!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Yukihiro Shimada and Shigeki Sano.

Canto bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Taamu misses with a low kick.
Taamu looks to land a body kick but Canto moved away.
Canto appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Taamu lands with a kick to the temple. Canto shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
It looks like Zuillnic Canto has been cut.
Canto on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Canto shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Taamu as he jumps to the side.
Canto shoots in for a double leg but Taamu sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

so Canto counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Taamu pulls Canto in close to his closed guard and prevents Canto from doing any damage or advancing position.
Canto postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Taamu is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Canto, into his guard.

Taamu is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Canto had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Taamu defends it easily.
Canto working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Taamu doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Taamu manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Canto looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Canto is looking for a triangle but Taamu pushes his legs off easily.
Taamu avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Canto has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Taamu is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Canto.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Taamu uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Canto has time to react.

Horrible takedown attempt by Canto or perhaps it was just good defense by Taamu, which made it look bad.
