PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sam Spencer (ranked 2503 p4p, 3568 weight class) and Mikey Day (ranked 300 p4p, 350 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Sam Spencer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mikey Day!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Gwen Towbar and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Day thuds a left hand into Spencer's body.

Day gets a double leg takedown into Spencer's guard.
Spencer wants to get back to his feet but Day passes into half guard.

Day tries to pass the half guard into mount. Spencer knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Spencer on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Spencer tries to get out of the position.
Day with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Day is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Spencer sees it coming and defends easily.
Day thows a huge punch but Spencer dodges it nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Day takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Day passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Spencer!
Day controlling the pace for now.

Spencer is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
The referee warns Spencer that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Spencer squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.

My spies in Gym inform me that Day has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Day punching from mount but Spencer doing a good job of avoiding damage.

Day is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Spencer can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Day looking to control and managing it successfully.

Let's hope that Day has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
It looks like Day might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Day.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Day lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Day misses with a looping left.
Spencer throws a nice inside leg kick.
Spencer uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Day.
Day connects with a jab.

Day fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Spencer, pushing him back against the cage.
Day drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Spencer gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Day has picked Spencer up - he's going for a ride! Day dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Mikey Day has got the better of the ground game so far.
Day perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Day has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Day looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Day is pressing down on Spencer's thigh, looking to free his foot. Spencer is holding on for now.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Spencer is looking to escape.
Spencer won't allow Day to pass to mount.
Day sitting and controlling from the half guard.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Day is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Spencer defends it well.
Day is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Spencer!

Day with shots to the head and body - Spencer looks very uncomfortable down there.

Day's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
More stalling from Day.
Day lands a nice shot to the head.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Spencer defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Day.
Day controlling the position easily from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mikey Day showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Day throws a body shot but no joy.
Spencer throws a right and a left that Day avoids nicely.
Day changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Spencer wants to land a leg kick but Day is out of range.
Spencer looks to throw the jab but Day is out of range.

Spencer tries to keep at a distance but Day has taken the fight into the clinch.
Day has Spencer pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Spencer manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Come on Day - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Day is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Spencer to keep the fight standing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sam Spencer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mikey Day.
Day jumps guard but Spencer stands there with Day around his waist. Day gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Spencer is pressed up against the cage. Day has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Spencer down to the mat. Spencer avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Day takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Day misses the shot to the body.
Day wants to clinch up but Spencer keeps it at a distance.

Day gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Day keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Spencer's efforts to push away.
Day is trying to drag Spencer to the mat but Spencer just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Day has Spencer pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Spencer manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Day pulls guard effortlessly.
Sam Spencer has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Day tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Spencer is fighting to break Day's control of his arms but Day is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Day is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Day content to control rather than advance.
Mikey Day is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Day is continuing to stall.
Yet more stalling tactics from Day.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Spencer looks like he's trying to stand up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Sam Spencer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
A slow jab from Spencer misses its intended target.
Day displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Spencer throws out the jab.

Day throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Spencer tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Day is in Spencer's guard.
Day not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mikey Day comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Day has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
