TWGC 30 (155lbs, D1): Tokyo Qualifier - Round 1 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 9 wins and 5 losses; Morrison Lee! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 34 wins and 19 losses; Masa Wasa! The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Ren Mimura and Taro Takaoka.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Lee closes the distance and clinches up with Wasa, looking for a takedown. Lee pushes Wasa against the cage but Wasa circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Lee shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Lee was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Lee (4) vs (0) Wasa Lee is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Wasa knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Lee tries to move into full mount but can't pass Wasa's legs. Lee wants to lay and pray for a moment but Wasa keeps working. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Wasa gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Lee is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Lee (7) vs (0) Wasa The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Wasa rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Lee working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Wasa felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Wasa is looking to regain half guard here but Lee keeps moving and retains side control. Lee wants to control but Wasa is keeping him busy. The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

Wasa isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Lee stacks Wasa on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. Lee gets back to half guard. Wasa prevents Lee from improving his position.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Wasa is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Lee doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Wasa. Wasa is trying to control. Lee wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Lee is looking for a sweep. Wasa is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Wasa is controlling the pace.
Wasa wants to take a breather but Lee is having none of it.

That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Wasa tries to free his leg and advance position but Lee is retaining full guard. Lee has his foot on Wasa's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Wasa works his way back into a safe position though. Lee manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Wasa manages to get himself to full guard.
Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Lee (25) vs (5) Wasa Wasa looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Wasa keeping moving, preventing Lee from controlling successfully. Wasa looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Lee puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Lee controlling the action here.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Wasa is not content to let Lee control the position. Wasa regains full guard. Nicely done. Lee wants to control from the top but Wasa keeps moving. Wasa is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Wasa trying to keep a closed guard but Lee is proving a slippery customer.

That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Lee passes Wasa's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Lee moves nicely into side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Lee (28) vs (5) Wasa Lee tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Wasa tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Lee wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that's the end of the fight! Lee takes the fight on points by 28 to 5. A very excited looking Morrison Lee made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction. |
