Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 16 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mark Merel! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 17 - 14 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mason Norris! The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Chris Edwards and Daniel Bishop.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Norris thumps Merel with a low kick. Norris turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick. Norris walks into a straight right hand from Merel. Merel closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Norris is looking to get back to is feet but Merel passes into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Merel wants to control but Norris is keeping him busy. Merel throwing strikes but missing, from side control. Merel is trying to get an arm triangle but Norris is defending well. Norris parries the strikes from Merel easily there. Merel is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Norris to escape.
Merel looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Norris is avoiding damage well.
Merel is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Norris has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Norris wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! Norris dodges the ground and pound from Merel. Merel just content to control the position. Merel in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time. Merel is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Norris is trying to escape and Merel transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Norris is forced to tap! Nice work there by Merel! Very nice indeed!
