Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Marcelo Vega (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Costello (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vega scores a takedown into full mount! Vega avoids the attempt from Costello to control. Vega misses with a head shot. Costello is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Vega looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet. Vega goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Costello turns into him and now he's in Vega's guard.
Costello avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Vega keeping moving, preventing Costello from controlling successfully. Vega might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Costello looking to pass the guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Costello trying to stand up but can't free himself from Vega's guard. Vega trying to keep a closed guard but Costello is proving a slippery customer.
Vega has his foot on Costello's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Costello works his way back into a safe position though. Costello would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Costello avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Vega shoots in and bounces Costello off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Costello looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Vega wants to control from the top but Costello keeps moving. Costello wants to sweep here but Vega controlling him for the moment. Costello keeping moving, preventing Vega from controlling successfully. Vega won't allow Costello to sweep him here. Costello can't keep his opponent in guard - Vega advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Vega seems to be working for a kimura but Costello defends the submission attempt. Costello is not content to let Vega control the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Vega shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Vega was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Vega stands up from mount. Strange move. Vega closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Costello to the mat! Costello manages to get full guard. Vega has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Costello looks gassed! Costello lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Vega! Vega tries to hold on but Costello pushes him away. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Vega slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Vega trying to control but Costello postures up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Vega looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Vega is trying to get back to full guard. Vega is looking to get back to full guard here but Costello has managed to pass to side control instead. Costello jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Vega manages to avoid the submission attempt. Vega gets back to half guard. Vega missing with punches from the bottom.

Marcelo Vega dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Vega shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Vega controls from within his opponent's guard. Costello tries to land a sweep but no joy. Vega trying to control the position from guard on top but Costello is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Vega slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Vega looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Costello can't do much from the bottom here. Costello is breathing heavily.

Ooooh, that looks tight… Costello is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Costello and Vega has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Vega is trying to get an arm triangle but Costello is defending well. Costello defending against the ground and pound. Costello is trying to improve his position. Vega goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Costello rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Vega's guard! Nice work there by Costello!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Vega escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Costello gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Vega is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Vega had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Costello is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Vega Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Costello's back instead. Vega is riding his opponent, not letting Costello buck him off.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Costello looking very determined here, making life difficult for Vega.
Vega looking for the choke from the back. Vega is trying to stick to Costello's back but Costello is turning into Vega. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Vega's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Costello. Costello avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Costello throws a right hand that Vega ducks under and follows up with a left that Vega also avoids with ease. Vega shoots for a takedown but Costello saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Costello misses with a few strikes there.
Vega looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Costello misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Vega shoots in looking for a takedown. Costello tries to sprawl out of it but Vega keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Costello manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Marcelo Vega. That's going to take a lot out of him. Vega shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Costello but Costello pushes him off and we're back to square one. Decent striking displayed by Costello there. Vega drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Costello is trying to control the position but Vega postures up. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Vega passes easily into side control. Nice work. Vega moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Vega lands a nice forearm strike. Costello pushes Vega away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Vega gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Costello tries to bench press Vega off him but Vega keeps the position. Vega trying to control the position but Costello is working away. Vega misses with the ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vega is trying to get an arm triangle but Costello is defending well. That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Costello is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Marcelo Vega is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Vega is trying to get an arm triangle but Costello is defending well. Vega advances nicely into full mount. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Vega jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Costello manages to avoid the submission attempt. Vega staying calm.
And that's the end of the fight! Marcelo Vega showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Vega, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
