CACC 113 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the light heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 13 wins and 5 losses; Joe Average! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 5 wins and 3 losses; Andy Shifter! The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Alan Glass and Cecil Peabody.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Shifter misses with a takedown attempt - Average sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Average looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Average (2) vs (0) Shifter Shifter wants to get back to full guard. Average is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Average is taking a breather. Shifter says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Average wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shifter keeps working.
That's one minute gone in the round. Average tries to pass the half guard into mount. Shifter knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Shifter controlling the position for now. Average wants to take a breather but Shifter is having none of it.

Average tries to free his leg and advance position but Shifter is retaining full guard. Shifter wants to hit a sweep here but Average passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Shifter there! Score +3 for passing guard: Average (5) vs (0) Shifter Shifter is controlling an arm, preventing Average from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Shifter regains half guard. Average is trying to work for a kimura but Shifter is defending well.

Average tries to pass to full mount but Shifter defends it. Average seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Shifter does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Score +3 for passing guard: Average (8) vs (0) Shifter Average looking to control but instead Shifter has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard. Average is looking to take a break and control but Shifter is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Shifter is in trouble now - Average has advanced to mount! That's six minutes gone in the round. Average fails to move to back control. Average tries to control but Shifter wriggling away. Shifter is trying desperately to improve position. Average wants to take Shifter's back here but Shifter is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
Average wants to control the pace but Shifter is squirming around nicely.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Average working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. Average is looking to work his way around to Shifter's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position. We've been hearing good reports from Average's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Shifter keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Average wants to take his opponent's back but Shifter doesn't allow it. Average trying to control but Shifter is having none of it.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Average controlling from the full mount. Average's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Average trying to control but he's not successful this time.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Average jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Shifter manages to avoid the submission attempt. You can see the frustration on Shifter's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Average tries to move into full mount but can't pass Shifter's legs. Shifter is not content to let Average control the position.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Average goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Shifter rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Average's guard! Nice work there by Shifter! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Average (11) vs (2) Shifter
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Average keeping moving, preventing Shifter from controlling successfully. Average has his foot on Shifter's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Shifter works his way back into a safe position though. Shifter wants to control from the top but Average keeps moving. Shifter controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Average trying to keep a closed guard but Shifter is proving a slippery customer.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Average is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Shifter's corner is telling him to maintain position. Average is trying to control the position from the bottom.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Shifter wants to control from the top but Average keeps moving. Shifter sitting in guard here, content to control. Average has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Shifter can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Average is looking for a triangle but Shifter pushes his legs off easily.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Average wants to improve his position but instead Shifter has moved into half guard.
Shifter seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Average does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Shifter might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Average haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Average is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Shifter with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
And that's the end of the fight! Average takes the fight on points by 11 to 2. Our winner, Joe Average, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans. |
