PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Edgar Bravo (ranked 1985 p4p, 3505 weight class) and Kaino Ukkonen (ranked 248 p4p, 407 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Edgar Bravo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kaino Ukkonen! The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Paul Aken and Nard Betker.

Bravo appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Ukkonen stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Ukkonen wants it to stay on the feet. Ukkonen looks like he wants to counter punch here. Ukkonen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Bravo drops down looking for a counter takedown but Ukkonen sprawls and moves away. Bravo tries for a takedown but Ukkonen circles away easily and Ukkonen counters with a shoot takedown. Bravo fights it but they end up in guard. Ukkonen wants to pass the guard but Bravo is keeping the position. Bravo seems keen to control Ukkonen's posture. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bravo keeping moving, preventing Ukkonen from controlling successfully. Ukkonen lands a couple of decent looking shots.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Bravo looking for a guillotine here but Ukkonen defends easily.

Ukkonen lands a couple of elbows. Bravo keeping moving, preventing Ukkonen from controlling successfully. Ukkonen might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Bravo haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Bravo looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Ukkonen's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ukkonen working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Bravo's head. Ukkonen wants to control from the top but Bravo keeps moving. Ukkonen postures up.

That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Ukkonen is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Bravo misses with a shot to the body and Ukkonen counters with a nice uppercut. Bravo showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Ukkonen.
Bravo fails miserably with a takedown attempt. A countering left hand to the body from Ukkonen misses. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Edgar Bravo. That's going to take a lot out of him. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Bravo feints and as Ukkonen raises his hands in defense, Bravo changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Ukkonen looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Kaino Ukkonen dominated that round. That's time! Bravo's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Bravo misses with a takedown and Ukkonen counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Bravo fails to land the takedown. Bravo staying out of range there. and Bravo counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Ukkonen! Ukkonen controls the position for a moment. Bravo knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ukkonen on the ground. Ukkonen is looking to reverse the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ukkonen manages to work his way to half guard, despite Bravo's best efforts. Ukkonen has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Ukkonen regains full guard. Nicely done. Bravo looking to pass the guard. Ukkonen is trying to keep Bravo in close.
Bravo drops back, looking for a kneebar! Ukkonen looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Ukkonen looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Ukkonen!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ukkonen wants to control but Bravo is keeping him busy. Ukkonen creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ukkonen trying to control the position but Bravo is working away. Bravo gets back to half guard. Ukkonen lands strikes from half guard. Bravo trying to control from the bottom.
Ukkonen is looking for a kimura but Bravo is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ukkonen to get the leverage. Ukkonen has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Bravo looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bravo is refusing to be controlled, as Ukkonen sits in half guard. Bravo makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Bravo. Ukkonen is pushing down on Bravo's leg trying to pass to half guard. Bravo is fighting to maintain full guard but Ukkonen has managed to sneak the leg through. Bravo looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Ukkonen looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Bravo with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Bravo trying to control but Ukkonen postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ukkonen controlling the action here. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Ukkonen connects with a nice short shot to Bravo's temple. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Kaino Ukkonen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round! Ukkonen takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Bravo with a poor takedown and Bravo takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Ukkonen takes a swing at Bravo's ribcage but misses. A jab from Ukkonen does it's job there. Ukkonen shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Bravo as he jumps to the side. Ukkonen feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. That's four minutes gone in the round. Bravo is looking to get to half guard. Ukkonen tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Kaino Ukkonen is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. Bravo tries to hold on but Ukkonen postures up. Ukkonen looking to control and managing it successfully. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Ukkonen lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
And that's the end of the fight! Kaino Ukkonen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Ukkonen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
