PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Maxim Ward (ranked 3260 p4p, 3614 weight class) and Sergio Vargas (ranked 434 p4p, 468 weight class). Vargas has chosen a warrior's call as his entrance music. Sergio Vargas is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sergio Vargas!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Thiago Cunha and Mauricio Rocha.

Ward just misses with a punch to the body.
Vargas throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
We've been hearing reports that Ward has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Vargas has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Vargas will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Vargas lands a nice hook to Ward's body. Ward takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Ward bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Vargas's head.

Maxim Ward seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Vargas lands a nice looking kick to the body. Ward takes a step back to recover.
Vargas slips under a jab from Ward.
Ward ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Vargas moves away.
Vargas lands a glancing blow to the side of Ward's head.
Ward changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Vargas thuds his right hand into Ward's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Ward tries to move into range but Vargas moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Vargas throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Ward cracks Vargas with an open hand slap.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ward lands a nice hook to Vargas's body. Vargas takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Vargas uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Ward.

Ward tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Ward tries to throw a body punch but Vargas avoids it by throwing Ward back against the cage.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Vargas prevents Ward from breaking the clinch.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Ward as Vargas tries to tie him up.

Ward works on Vargas's body with a couple of short punches.

Ward gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vargas keeping moving, preventing Ward from controlling successfully.
Vargas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ward. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Vargas is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ward is controlling him.
Ward sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Vargas's guard.
Ward is looking to advance position but Vargas won't allow it.
Ward trying to control the action but Vargas is working from the bottom.

Vargas regains full guard. Nicely done.
Ward won't allow Vargas to sweep him here.
Ward postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Ward tries to free his leg and advance position but Vargas is retaining full guard.

Ward trying to control the position from guard on top but Vargas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ward seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Ward is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Ward won't allow Vargas to sweep him here.

Ward drops back looking for a submission - "I'm sorry sir, but I'm gunna break your leg" says Ward as he cranks on the unfortunate limb! Vargas screams and taps out before any major damage is done! Don't mess with Ward! Nice submission victory there!

A less than humble Maxim Ward misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
