This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the featherweight division. Introducing today's competitors. And in the blue corner, fighting out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 1 wins and 0 losses; Rene Neri! The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, James Glass and Phil Schofield.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Hughes is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Neri's half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Hughes (2) vs (0) Neri Neri is trying to control but can't.
Neri tries to get to full guard but Hughes has control of the leg. Neri is still trying to improve position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hughes is trying to control the action in half guard but Neri is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Hughes definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Neri trying to control here.

Neri eventually gives up the hold. Hughes actively working from the bottom here. Neri is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Neri is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hughes is just riding it out for now. Neri eventually gives up the hold. Neri is working for a kimura here but Hughes manages to reverse the position and he's now in Neri's guard.

Hughes eventually gives up the hold. Neri looking for submissions off his back. Neri is looking for a sweep. Hughes is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Hughes is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Neri felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Neri looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hughes is one step ahead there. Neri working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hughes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Neri is tightening it up a little... Hughes has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Hughes reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Hughes taps out! Nice BJJ there by Neri!
