PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Maresh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Randy War (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Randy War!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maresh tries to clinch but War is having none of it.
War throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Maresh's waist but Maresh gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing War off to one side.
War connects with a jab.

War pushes Maresh up against the cage in a clinch.
Maresh tries to pull guard but War holds him up against the cage and eventually Maresh drops back down to his feet.
War wants to break the clinch but can't.
Maresh tries to pull guard but War won't allow it.
War wants to break free but Maresh has control.
War can't get the takedown.
Stalling in the clinch from Maresh.

Maresh is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Maresh is breathing heavily.

A head kick lands from War that sends Maresh to the canvas. Maresh tries to scramble back to his feet but War brings him back down into side control.

It looks like James Maresh has been cut.

War stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Oh Maresh is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Maresh lands with a cross.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Maresh works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Maresh misses with a takedown attempt - War sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Maresh tries to lock up and control but War gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Maresh seems to have got his legs back now.
Maresh tries to reverse the position but War maintains control.
Maresh sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Maresh is positioning himself well to prevent War advancing to mount.
War prevents Maresh from standing back up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Maresh is looking to improve his position.
War is thwarting Maresh's attempts to control the position.
Maresh gets full guard.
Maresh is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Maresh manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Maresh forces War back against the cage and clinches.

War escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
War circles away from the clinch attempt.
War ducks right into an uppercut from Maresh.
War swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Maresh thows a body kick. War tries to catch it but that hurt him.

Maresh closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Maresh decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Maresh throws a right and a left that War avoids nicely.
Nice sprawl there from Maresh as War shoots in.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
War takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
War shoots in for a takedown but Maresh shows good takedown defense.

Maresh darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Maresh trying to control from War's half guard. War has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Maresh wants to control from the top but War keeps moving.
War wants to stand and escape but Maresh is having none of it.
Maresh throwing strikes but missing.
Maresh is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Maresh throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as War works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Maresh working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of War's head.
Maresh has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Maresh lands a couple of elbows.
Maresh wants to stand and escape but instead War has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Maresh looking to hit a scissor sweep but War is one step ahead there.

War stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maresh swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Maresh trying to keep a closed guard but War is proving a slippery customer.
War passes into half guard under a barage of strikes.
Maresh tries to get to full guard but War has control of the leg.
Maresh is working hard here to advance position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
The crowd cheers as War lands an impressive looking overhand right. Maresh doesn't seem phased though.

Maresh closes the distance and clinches.
War jumps guard but Maresh stands there with War around his waist. War gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
James Maresh has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Randy War.
Maresh wants to break the clinch but can't.
Maresh looks to throw an elbow but misses.

Maresh tries for a takedown but War sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Both guys are working to get underhooks.
War wants to break free but Maresh has control.
Maresh has had enough of the clinch but War keeps him there for the moment.

James Maresh is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Maresh will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

War closes the distance and clinches up with Maresh, looking for a takedown. War pushes Maresh against the cage but Maresh circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

War takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Maresh throws a lazy head kick
and War counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
War fails to land with a series of punches.
Maresh throws a combination that misses
and War counters with a one-two to the body.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Maresh is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

War misses with a series of wild punches.
War swats away the attempt to clinch by Maresh.
War tries to clinch up.

Maresh closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Maresh lands in his opponent's guard.
Maresh wants to control from the top but War keeps moving.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
War manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Maresh manages to get himself to full guard.

War decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Randy War seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Maresh with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maresh drops his hands momentarily and War takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Maresh looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Maresh is stalling here. War is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Maresh seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and War has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
War landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.

Maresh explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Maresh scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
War walks straight into a right hand from Maresh - that's dropped him! Maresh jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save War from any more punishment! War complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:44 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). James Maresh!
