PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Al Barru (ranked 3865 p4p, 4892 weight class) and Boio Royal (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Al Barru!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Boio Royal!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Shigeki Sano.

Barru feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Barru tries to stand but Royal is controlling from the bottom.

Royal wants to get back to his feet but Barru is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Barru wants to control from the top but Royal keeps moving.
Royal is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Royal thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Royal in particular looking to stall.

Royal is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Barru is staying active underneath Royal, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Royal fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Barru avoids it really well and circles away.
Barru tries to bum rush Royal with a series of wild strikes but Royal uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Royal unleashes a big counter combination but Barru bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Barru looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Royal is fending him off so far but Barru persists. Nope, Royal circles away and we're back to standing.

Royal closes the distance and clinches up with Barru, looking for a takedown. Royal pushes Barru against the cage but Barru circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Al Barru has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Boio Royal.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Barru closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Barru breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Royal dives in for a single leg takedown but Barru sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Barru appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Royal will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Al Barru will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Barru stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Royal swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Royal working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Barru doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Barru manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Barru displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Royal.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Barru throws a sloppy head kick and Royal moves out of range easily.

Barru working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Royal tries to kick Barru off in order to stand up. Barru Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.

Barru wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Royal, who protects the arm well.
Royal wants to control but Barru postures up.
Barru prevents Royal from escaping the position.

Barru decides to stand back up. Barru steps back and let's Royal get back to his feet.
Royal tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Barru manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

and Barru counters with a takedown into side control.
Barru knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Royal on the ground.
Royal is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Barru off and has taken his back!
Royal takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Royal keeps control of the position easily here as Barru tries to buck him off.

Royal is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Barru defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Royal lands with a nice looking elbow that stuns Barru.
Royal throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage.
Barru staying busy and making it hard for Royal to control.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Royal struggling to land strikes to the head as Barru covers up.
Al Barru is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Royal has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.

I would just about give that final round to Boio Royal.
I think Barru has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
