PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Sampson (ranked 3545 p4p, 2847 weight class) and John Patill (ranked 352 p4p, 296 weight class). Patill is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Soldiers eyes. John Patill will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ryan Sampson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, John Patill!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Paulsen Ambrosius and Aafke Stam.

Sampson falls off balance throwing a combination

and Patill counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Sampson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Patill got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sampson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Patill has managed to get both his arms back between Sampson's legs - danger averted.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Patill working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Sampson can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Patill controls the pace.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

It looks like Patill might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Sampson shoots in and drives through. Patill sprawls well.
Sampson sets himself, and Patill steps forward looking for the clinch! Sampson avoids it this time.

Patill is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Sampson will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Sampson is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Sampson is looking for a sweep. Patill is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Sampson wants to get back to full guard but Patill has passed into side control.
A lull in the action here.
Sampson tries to buck Patill off but Patill is having none of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Patill is staying tight to Sampson's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Sampson tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Patill wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Sampson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.

Sampson tries to hold on but Patill pushes him away.

Patill is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Sampson is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Patill jumps into side control!
Sampson gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Sampson bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Let's hope that Patill has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

John Patill showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Sampson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Sampson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Sampson is looking to work some ground and pound but Patill has wrist control.
Patill is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Still in half guard, Patill seems content to control.

Sampson is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Patill's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Patill's back!
Patill is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

Sampson is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.

Sampson pushes Patill away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Patill gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Patill is working Sampson over with some ground and pound from side control.
Patill moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Sampson tries to bench press Patill off him but Patill keeps the position.

I would just about give that final round to John Patill.
I've got Patill winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
