PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Konichiwa Jempsa (ranked 1564 p4p, 1361 weight class) and Carl Brooks (ranked 198 p4p, 173 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 13 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Konichiwa Jempsa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 13 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Carl Brooks! The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Robert Douchet and Gregory Folan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jempsa closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Jempsa lands in his opponent's guard. Brooks pushes Jempsa off and gets back to his feet.
Jempsa walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Jempsa shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Brooks napping and manages to drive through into side control! This has been an exciting period of action! Jempsa trying to control the action but Brooks is working from the bottom. Jempsa in side control, just content to control the action for now. Brooks is holding Jempsa down, trying to stall.
That's one minute gone in the round. Brooks is trying to improve his position. Jempsa tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Brooks can't do much from the bottom here. Jempsa tries to advance to mount but can't.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Brooks is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Jempsa off and has taken his back! Jempsa tries to break free.
A lull in the action here.
Brooks throwing sloppy strikes. Brooks has the hooks in. Jempsa is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Jempsa trying to control the hands but Brooks breaks the grip. Brooks is hanging on to Jempsa's back as he tries to escape.
Brooks lands with a hammerfist to the side of Jempsa's head. Jempsa covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jempsa just trying to survive but Brooks is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish. Jempsa staying busy and making it hard for Brooks to control. Brooks is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Jempsa knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Jempsa for a finish. Brooks is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Jempsa has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here. Brooks working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet. Nice work there by Jempsa.
Brooks utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Brooks working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jempsa doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jempsa manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Jempsa showing good wrestling skills to control the position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Carl Brooks dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Jempsa bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Brooks darts in and out, connecting with a jab. Brooks has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight. Jempsa clobbers Brooks with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise. Jempsa gets a takedown into half guard. Brooks has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Brooks regains full guard. Nicely done. Brooks working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jempsa tries to free his leg and advance position but Brooks is retaining full guard. Jempsa stands and throws Brooks's legs to the side, diving into side control. Brooks wants to control but Jempsa postures up. Jempsa landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. Jempsa working away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jempsa wants to control but Brooks is keeping him busy. Brooks is looking for a sweep. Jempsa wants to lay and pray for a moment but Brooks keeps working. Brooks is looking to regain half guard here but Jempsa keeps moving and retains side control. Jempsa trying to control the position but Brooks is working away. Jempsa is working Brooks over with some ground and pound from side control. Brooks taking a bit of punishment here - Jempsa scoring with strikes.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jempsa is trying to ground and pound but Brooks uses the momentary lack of control by Jempsa to regain half guard. Jempsa trying to control the action but Brooks is working from the bottom. Jempsa with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Brooks punching from the bottom.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Brooks is trying to control but Jempsa passes into side control!

That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Jempsa postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Jempsa throws an elbow but Brooks slips to the side and avoids it well. Brooks is looking for a sweep. Brooks struggling a bit here. Brooks takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
You can see the frustration on Brooks's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Jempsa throwing shots but missing, from side control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Konichiwa Jempsa dominated that second round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round! Brooks fails to land with a series of punches.
Brooks fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Jempsa to the ground. Brooks is now in Jempsa's guard. Brooks trying to control but Jempsa is working from the bottom. Brooks stands and throws Jempsa's legs to the side, diving into side control. Brooks in side control, throwing shots but Jempsa defends. Jempsa tries to get back to half guard but can't. That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Jempsa keeping moving, preventing Brooks from controlling successfully. Jempsa can't keep his opponent in guard - Brooks advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Brooks is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Jempsa has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Brooks is working away from the top position though. Brooks is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Brooks sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Jempsa defending well though.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Brooks throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Brooks looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Brooks stalling away here and it's allowed Jempsa to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Brooks tries to free his leg and advance position but Jempsa is retaining full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Brooks slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Konichiwa Jempsa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Jempsa closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Brooks to the mat! Brooks manages to get full guard. Jempsa trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Brooks keeping moving, preventing Jempsa from controlling successfully. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jempsa preventing the sweep. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Brooks wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Jempsa trying to control the position from guard on top but Brooks is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that's the end of the fight! Carl Brooks comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Brooks has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
