PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Raul Mendez (ranked 24163 p4p, 24618 weight class) and Jai Cheng (ranked 503 p4p, 494 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Raul Mendez !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jai Cheng!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, James Atkins and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cheng looks to score with a jab to the body but Mendez is just out of range.
Mendez is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Cheng.
Cheng looks to land a combination. Mendez sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Cheng shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Mendez as he jumps to the side.
Mendez appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Cheng tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mendez sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cheng somewhat.

Mendez throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Cheng was covering up waiting for the punch and Mendez finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mendez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mendez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Mendez wants to pass the guard but Cheng is keeping the position.

Mendez throws a strike but Cheng rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Mendez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cheng on the ground.

Mendez seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Mendez wants to control but Cheng is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Mendez is looking for a sweep. Cheng is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Cheng is trying to control. Mendez wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Cheng is working for a submission of some sort.

Mendez looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Cheng looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Cheng is thwarting Mendez 's attempts to control the position.

Mendez has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cheng is working away from the top position though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mendez decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Cheng has one foot on Mendez 's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Mendez misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Mendez shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cheng as he jumps to the side.

Mendez has closed the distance and engaged Cheng in a clinch.

Mendez breaks the clinch.
Mendez fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Mendez throws a big shot that misses.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Mendez shoots in but no luck this time.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Raul Mendez . That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A solid body kick from Cheng.
Cheng lands a leg kick that knocks Mendez off balance momentarily.
Cheng turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jai Cheng dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Cheng changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mendez tries to avoid it but Cheng manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mendez to the ground. Mendez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mendez throws the kick towards the body but Cheng avoids it.

Mendez looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Cheng!

Raul Mendez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Mendez closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Cheng kicks off Mendez and gets to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Crunch! Cheng slams his shin into Mendez 's torso.
Cheng looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Raul Mendez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jai Cheng.

Mendez throws a low kick, looking for Cheng's leg but Cheng calmly moves out of range.
Cheng fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mendez avoids it really well and circles away.
As Cheng backs away, Mendez returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.
Horrible takedown attempt by Mendez or perhaps it was just good defense by Cheng, which made it look bad.
Cheng wants to counter the offense by Mendez and move into the clinch position.

and Mendez counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Mendez .

Cheng is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Mendez presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Mendez tries to pull guard but Cheng forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Mendez effectively controlling the action here.
Cheng wants to take the fight to the mat but Mendez manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Mendez has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Cheng has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Mendez after a bit of a struggle.
Mendez is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Cheng is defending well for now.

Mendez wanted to stand there but Cheng had control of the position.

Mendez wants to pass the guard but Cheng is keeping the position.
Cheng has a closed guard, preventing Mendez from standing up.

Cheng is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Cheng is breathing heavily.
Cheng wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Cheng has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mendez can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Mendez stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Cheng fails with a takedown attempt.
Mendez leaves Cheng with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Cheng keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jai Cheng will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Mendez has closed the distance and engaged Cheng in a clinch.

Mendez has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Cheng uses from the top position.
Mendez is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Mendez is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Cheng stays in close to Mendez 's body and controls the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mendez tries to clinch up but Cheng circles away and keeps his distance.

Cheng rushes Mendez and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Cheng is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mendez defends well.

Cheng takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Cheng is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Mendez is controlling him.

Cheng shoots for a double leg takedown but Mendez sprawls well. He's pushed Cheng's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Mendez moves into the clinch.
Cheng is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Mendez just leaning against Cheng, taking a breather.
Mendez misses with a hook to the ribs.

Cheng pulls guard effortlessly.
Mendez wants to pass the guard but Cheng is keeping the position.
Cheng is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Mendez distracts Cheng with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Mendez decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Raul Mendez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jai Cheng is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Sloppy strikes from Mendez . Those never looked like landing.
Cheng now looks to counter with a shot at the body.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Raul Mendez .
I think Cheng has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
