Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ellis Rowards! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 7 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Pat Kelly! The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Steve Montenegro and Jonathan Paton.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kelly swings for the body but Rowards moves out of range.
A little feinted left hand from Rowards on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Kelly circles away from the clinch attempt and Kelly connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Kelly fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Rowards scores with a takedown into Kelly's guard. Rowards controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Rowards content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kelly can do anything to dispel that myth. Kelly is working an open guard so Rowards takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rowards is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Kelly's half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Rowards takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Kelly wants to get back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rowards working Kelly over with strikes. Rowards with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Rowards tries to stand but can't do so whilst Kelly controls his leg. Kelly is striking from the bottom but he's now found himself mounted! Oh dear - not enough focus on defense there.
Rowards stands up from mount. Strange move. Rowards closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kelly did well to prevent Rowards getting side control. Rowards trying to pass the guard but Kelly defending well. Rowards content to control rather than advance. Rowards has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kelly is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Rowards has latched onto it... Big trouble! Rowards pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Kelly is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Rowards!
