PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dzintars Reaper (ranked 4561 p4p, 4629 weight class) and Brett Nixon (ranked 0 p4p, 556 weight class). Nixon has chosen Throw it on me as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dzintars Reaper! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Brett Nixon! The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Reaper circles away from the clinch attempt and Reaper counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Reaper. Reaper showing good wrestling skills to control the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Reaper is standing up over Nixon. Nixon looks to escape but Reaper dives into side control.
Reaper thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Reaper is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position. Reaper grinds an elbow into Nixon's temple. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nixon is working to avoid the ground and pound but Reaper connects with a decent elbow. Nixon is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Reaper takes a little break here. Nixon wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Reaper has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Reaper is trying to get an arm triangle but Nixon is defending well. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Nixon gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Reaper scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Nixon?
Reaper controlling his opponent. Reaper is looking to work his way around to Nixon's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Nixon is trying to stand. Nixon really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Reaper. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Reaper controlling the position easily from mount. Reaper raining down hammerfists from mount. Reaper sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. This is a sustained period of stalling by Reaper. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Dzintars Reaper dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The fight stays on the outside here - Nixon looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Nixon gets caught flat footed, as Reaper shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Nixon is wriggling around but Reaper manages to pass to half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Reaper in particular looking to stall. Nixon is trying to escape back to his feet but Reaper uses the scramble to pass into side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Reaper scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Nixon to see if he's OK. Nixon wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
That's one minute gone in the round. Reaper staying calm. Nixon is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Reaper has just dragged him back down to the mat. The referee asks Reaper politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Reaper prefers to stall for the moment though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Reaper is trying to get an arm triangle but Nixon is defending well. Reaper is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Nixon can do to turn this around? Reaper has hold of Nixon's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Nixon seems comfortable defending it but Reaper has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Nixon is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Nixon is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Reaper couldn't care less - he's delighted!
