PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Xin Chan (ranked 4377 p4p, 4449 weight class) and Dzintars Reaper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Dzintars Reaper was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Xin Chan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dzintars Reaper!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Jeff Smith and Ryoma Takatsuka.

Chan feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Chan stands and throws Reaper's legs to the side, diving into side control.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Reaper can do anything to dispel that myth.

Chan wants to control but Reaper is keeping him busy.
Reaper really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Chan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reaper is working to avoid the ground and pound but Chan connects with a decent elbow.
Chan tries to score with some ground and pound. Reaper controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Chan wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Reaper, who protects the arm well.

Chan tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Chan has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Chan has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Reaper wants to get back to his feet.
Reaper tries to roll over but Chan keeps him under control.

Reaper is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Chan scores with a couple of nice shots.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Reaper is desperately trying to improve his position but Chan has a good base and remains in mount.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Reaper throws the kick towards the body but Chan avoids it.
Chan shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Chan displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Reaper.
Chan will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Reaper only half commits to the counter leg kick.
Reaper throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Chan shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Reaper as he jumps to the side.

and Chan counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Chan wants to control from the top but Reaper keeps moving.
Chan stands up over Reaper, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Chan is looking to advance position but Reaper has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Chan regains half guard.
Reaper wants to free his trapped foot but Chan is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Chan moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Chan controls Reaper momentarily but Reaper frees himself.
Chan tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Reaper wants to get up but he can't break Chan's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Reaper might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Chan haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Reaper throws a big shot that misses.

Reaper got a little sloppy there for a moment and Chan has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Reaper has managed to get both his arms back between Chan's legs - danger averted.

Chan has his foot on Reaper's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Reaper works his way back into a safe position though.

Dzintars Reaper showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Reaper dives in for a single leg takedown but Chan sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Chan throws a front kick aimed at Reaper's knee but Reaper avoids it well.
Reaper darts in looking for a takedown but Chan gets double underhooks and turns Reaper into the cage.
Reaper looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Xin Chan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dzintars Reaper.
Some bone on bone action there as Reaper checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

As Chan backs off Reaper throws a huge counter combo but Chan manages to avoid it all.
Chan shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

Reaper avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Chan fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Reaper is out of range.
