The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight stays on the outside here - Carpenter looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Carpenter throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Carpenter has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Dela Cruz has Carpenter pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Carpenter manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Carpenter must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Carpenter not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Let's hope that Carpenter has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Carpenter has his hands clasped together but Dela Cruz extends and breaks Carpenter's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Dela Cruz.
