PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paul Webber (ranked 4382 p4p, 4568 weight class) and Cain Velasquez (ranked 218 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Paul Webber!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Cain Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Dmitry Maklakov and Konstantin Menshow.

Velasquez drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Webber prevents Velasquez from moving into mount.
Velasquez wants to stand but Webber is controlling his arm.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Velasquez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Webber sprawls well initially but Velasquez persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Webber has one foot on Velasquez's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Webber rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Velasquez moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Webber tries to close the distance and clinch up but Velasquez swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Velasquez shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Webber napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Velasquez wants to work for an arm triangle but Webber is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Velasquez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Velasquez has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Webber is trying to keep an underhook but Velasquez manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Webber is looking for a sweep. Velasquez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Webber has his foot on Velasquez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Velasquez works his way back into a safe position though.
Velasquez distracts Webber with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Velasquez tries to stand but Webber is controlling from the bottom.
Velasquez wants to control from the top but Webber keeps moving.

Webber looking for a guillotine here but Velasquez defends easily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Velasquez is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Webber has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Velasquez is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Webber.

I think Velasquez has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
