PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Juan Cheng (ranked 6613 p4p, 6461 weight class) and Joe Woods (ranked 233 p4p, 227 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Juan Cheng!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joe Woods!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Alec Ball and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Woods clinches up against the cage.

Cheng has Woods pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Cheng pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Woods tumbling to the mat - Cheng dives into Woods's guard.

Woods is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Cheng tries to land knees in the clinch but Woods avoids the damage to the body.

Woods gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Cheng regains guard.
Cheng is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Woods dives into side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.


Woods decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Cheng bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Woods gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Woods is looking to escape.
Woods is pressing down on Cheng's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Woods is working an open guard so Cheng takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Cheng scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Woods kicks off Cheng and gets to his feet.

Woods moves into the clinch.
Cheng is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Woods breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Woods should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Woods shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Cheng manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Woods decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Cheng, up you get!

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Woods looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Cheng is working an open guard so Woods takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Cheng shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Woods is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Cheng's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Cheng's back!

Woods has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Cheng has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cheng wants to get back to his feet.
Cheng prevents Woods from getting a body triangle.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Woods is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Cheng is defending well though. Woods let's go of the attempt for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Cheng trying to control the action but Woods just sinks the hooks in.
Woods struggling to keep hold of the position.

Woods has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Cheng has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Woods scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Cheng is looking for a way out.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Woods dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Woods bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Cheng is looking to get back to his feet here but Woods is keeping cool and he's managed to take Cheng's back.
Cheng is trying to remain composed but Woods is hammering down strikes to the side of his head.

Woods working for the rear naked choke here. He's got one arm under but Cheng is defending well. A couple of punches soften him up though and Woods has tightened the hold! This one could be all over! It is! Cheng taps out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:51 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Joe Woods!
