PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Carpenter (ranked 3158 p4p, 2999 weight class) and Yowis Ben (ranked 341 p4p, 324 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Yowis Ben was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mike Carpenter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 18 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Yowis Ben!
The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Radbod Blank and Daniel Blasius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Carpenter closes the distance and clinches.
Ben wants a takedown.

Carpenter has hold of one of Ben's legs. Ben is fighting the takedown attempt but Carpenter gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Carpenter wants to pass the guard but Ben is keeping the position.
Carpenter throwing strikes but missing.
Ben wants to sweep here but Carpenter controlling him for the moment.
Carpenter stays in close to Ben's body and controls the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ben preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Carpenter slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Carpenter postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Ben keeping moving, preventing Carpenter from controlling successfully.

Carpenter lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Carpenter engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Ben looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Carpenter has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Carpenter lands a couple of elbows.

Ben has his foot on Carpenter's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Carpenter works his way back into a safe position though.
Ben is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Carpenter has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Ben is on him like a limpet, forcing Carpenter back against the cage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Carpenter turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Ben is looking for a sweep.
Ben being controlled for a moment.
Ben is trying to control Carpenter's posture but Carpenter avoids it.
Carpenter content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Ben is not content to let Carpenter control the position.
Ben tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Carpenter easily slips into full mount!
Ben is in all sorts of trouble here.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Ben tries to hold on but Carpenter pushes him away.
Carpenter content just to control the position here.
Carpenter wants to control the pace but Ben is squirming around nicely.
Ben is working to get back to half guard.
A nice elbow there by Carpenter.

It looks like Yowis Ben has been cut.
Carpenter fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Carpenter lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Ben hang on?
Carpenter controlling the pace for now.
Ben is trying desperately to improve position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Carpenter dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Yowis Ben's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Ben goes for a double leg but Carpenter avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Carpenter continues to drive forward.
Carpenter shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ben as he avoids it easily.

Carpenter shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ben but Ben pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Carpenter. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Carpenter gets a clinch.

Carpenter escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Yowis Ben is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Carpenter gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Carpenter has Ben pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Carpenter pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Ben tumbling to the mat - Carpenter dives into Ben's guard.
Ben wants to sweep but no luck.

Carpenter is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Carpenter is sitting in close to Ben's body. Ben has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Carpenter is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Carpenter is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Ben.
