PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Lee (ranked 1977 p4p, 1177 weight class) and Manalili Meesang (ranked 225 p4p, 144 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kevin Lee!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Manalili Meesang!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Ren Mimura and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lee fails with a takedown attempt.
Lee shoots in and drives through. Meesang sprawls well.
Lee staying out of range there.
Meesang connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Meesang keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Lee ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Lee drops his hands momentarily and Meesang takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Lee looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Meesang misses with a looping left.
Lee lands with a nice body punch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Meesang uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Lee.
Lee swings for the body but Meesang moves out of range.
Lee throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
A little jabbing left from Meesang on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Lee lands a nice hook to Meesang's body. Meesang takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Lee drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Lee tries for a kimura but Meesang is defending well.

Lee wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Meesang, who protects the arm well.
Meesang is trying to get back to half guard.

Meesang tries to bench press Lee off him but Lee keeps the position.

Meesang is not content to let Lee control the position.
Lee advances to mount.
Meesang is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Meesang controls the position.
Meesang has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lee cracks Meesang with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Meesang tries to hold on but Lee pushes him away.

Lee working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

Meesang is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Lee has taken his back.
Lee doesn't have the hooks in and Meesang manages to turn into his guard.
Lee is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Meesang looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Meesang is continuing to stall.
Meesang tries to stand but Lee is controlling from the bottom.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Kevin Lee dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Lee lands with a good body shot.
Meesang throws out a loose jab but Lee uses good head movement to avoid it.
Lee ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Meesang moves away.
Lee backing away here, and Meesang unleashes a leg kick that just misses.
Lee lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Meesang waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Lee.
Lee throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Lee shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Meesang counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Meesang misses with a looping right.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Meesang throws a solid leg kick but Lee takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Meesang.
Meesang looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Kevin Lee is winning the standup battle so far.
Lee fails with a takedown attempt.
Kevin Lee seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lee takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.
Manalili Meesang is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Meesang takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Lee tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Meesang was well out of range. Poor timing from Lee.
Meesang avoids the body shot from Lee.
Meesang feints a counter leg kick.
Meesang throws a looping overhand right but Lee ducks down to avoid it.
Lee scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Lee fails to land the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kevin Lee. That's going to take a lot out of him.

A slapping leg kick lands for Meesang.
Lee fails to land with a series of punches.

Lee tries to move into range but Meesang moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Meesang lands with a nice body kick.
Lee throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
enabling Meesang to counter with a crisp jab.
Lee closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

Lee is rocked!
Meesang lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Lee lands a jab.
Meesang lands a leg kick that knocks Lee off balance momentarily.
The crowd cheers as Lee lands an impressive looking overhand right. Meesang doesn't seem phased though.

Lee shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Lee showed some decent athleticism there.

Meesang pushes Lee off and gets back to his feet.

A slow jab from Meesang misses its intended target.
Lee throws a big counter combination but Meesang scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Crunch! Meesang slams his shin into Lee's torso.
Meesang just misses with a punch to the body.
Meesang misses with a body kick.
Lee throws a body shot but no joy.
Meesang looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Meesang tests Lee's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Lee misses with a takedown attempt - Meesang sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Lee scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Meesang doesn't seem bothered though.
Meesang misses with a straight left.
A punch combination from Lee misses.
Meesang only half commits to the counter leg kick.
Meesang misses with a hook
and Lee counters with a right hand to the body.

Meesang ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Lee moves away.
Lee appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Meesang wants to land a leg kick but Lee is out of range.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Meesang uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Lee.
Lee misses with a takedown
and Meesang counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Lee looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Lee is looking to wear down Meesang with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Lee throws a looping overhand right but Meesang ducks down to avoid it.
Lee moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Meesang avoids the body shot from Lee.
Meesang is trying to counter with his kicks.
Lee looks to land a right hand but Meesang moved out of range.
Lee lands with an uppercut that bounces Meesang off the cage and back into range.
Meesang throws a nice inside leg kick.

Lee bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Manalili Meesang showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Lee tries to bum rush Meesang with a series of wild strikes but Meesang uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

and Meesang counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Lee wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Meesang lands a right hook to the body.
Lee dives in and grabs Meesang's left leg, looking for a takedown. Meesang pushes down on Lee's head and hops out.
Lee has a takedown stuffed.

Meesang takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Lee throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Lee tries to score a power double leg takedown but Meesang sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Lee somewhat.

Meesang scores with a kick to the body.
Lee misses with a body shot.
Lee throws a hook to the side of Meesang's head but Meesang sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Meesang connects with a body shot.
Meesang wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.

Lee closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Meesang did well to prevent Lee getting side control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Lee wants to free his trapped foot but Meesang is holding on for dear life with his legs.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Meesang wants to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lee seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Meesang does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Lee prevents Meesang from improving his position.
Lee with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Meesang keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Meesang really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lee. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Meesang keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Lee seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Meesang does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Lee is working for a submission of some sort.

Lee is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Meesang defends it well.
Meesang wants to control but Lee is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Meesang tries to get to full guard but Lee has control of the leg.
Meesang keeping hold of Lee's head, controlling as best he can.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Lee is defended easily by Meesang.
Lee throws the left hand but Meesang avoids the punch easily.
Lee misses with a series of wild punches.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Meesang throws a shot to the body.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Lee.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Manalili Meesang.
I think Meesang has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
