PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Peter Smart (ranked 2035 p4p, 1937 weight class) and Jock Langdon (ranked 281 p4p, 265 weight class). Jock Langdon is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Peter Smart!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jock Langdon!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Saam Ante and Albert Achterberg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A slapping leg kick lands for Smart.
Langdon misses with a wild body shot.
The fighters circling - Smart throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Langdon walks into a stiff left hand from Smart.
Smart throws a hook but Langdon blocks it.
Langdon cracks Smart with a right hand to the side of the head.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Langdon has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Smart has his takedown stuffed
and Langdon counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Smart throws a leg kick but Langdon checks it.

Smart misses with a shot to the body
and Langdon counters with a nice uppercut.
Smart has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Smart there as he acknowledges the shot.
Smart throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Smart is looking to clinch.
Smart bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Langdon's head.
Peter Smart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Smart misses with a straight right.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Langdon tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Smart was well out of range. Poor timing from Langdon.
Smart feinted with a counter takedown.
Langdon misses with a hook.

Langdon drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Langdon lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Smart down.
Langdon has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Langdon wants to lay and pray for a moment but Smart keeps working.

Smart is trying to improve his position.
Smart is not content to let Langdon control the position.
Langdon controls the position.
Langdon lands a nice forearm strike.
Langdon is putting a hurting on Smart here, landing some big shots from side control.
We've been hearing good reports from Smart's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Langdon tries to move into full mount but can't pass Smart's legs.

Smart tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Langdon presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Langdon thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Smart is looking for a sweep. Langdon is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Langdon not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Langdon is nestled in close to Smart, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Smart is looking to get back to full guard here but Langdon has managed to pass to side control instead.
Smart sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Smart is looking to improve his position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smart working to try and regain half guard.
Smart is bucking up trying to escape but Langdon cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jock Langdon dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Smart looks to land a combination but Langdon avoids it well.

Smart rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Langdon counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Smart bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Smart throws a leg kick but Langdon moved away.
Langdon moves out of range of the strikes.
A slow jab from Smart misses its intended target.
Langdon misses with an uppercut. Smart saw that one coming.
Smart was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Langdon connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Smart momentarily.

and Smart counters with a slapping leg kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Langdon tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Smart was well out of range. Poor timing from Langdon.

Smart shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Smart showed some decent athleticism there.

Langdon kicks off Smart and gets to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Langdon shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smart as he jumps to the side.
Smart pivots, looking for a leg kick but Langdon is out of range and Smart settles back down.
Langdon connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

Smart looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Langdon!
Smart lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Langdon manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Smart wants to get back to full guard but Langdon has passed into side control.
Smart wants to control but Langdon postures up.

Langdon gets to mount! Smart was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Smart is trying desperately to improve position.
Langdon postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Smart looks a forlorn figure.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Langdon cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Smart can't escape the position.
Smart wants to hold on but Langdon pushes him away.

Langdon prevents Smart from getting the reversal.
Smart manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Langdon is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Smart is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Langdon scores with a couple of nice shots.
Langdon winds up and cracks Smart with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Langdon looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Langdon is working for a submission of some sort.
Smart is looking to control Langdon's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Smart avoid being mounted?

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smart keeping control of the position.
Smart is staying active underneath Langdon, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Smart tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Langdon has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Smart is trying to escape the mount.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jock Langdon showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Smart cracks Langdon with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Langdon throws a right and a left that both miss.
Langdon tries to bum rush Smart with a series of wild strikes but Smart uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Smart swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Smart tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Langdon lands a jab-cross combination.
Nice shot by Smart.
Smart doesn't manage to clinch there - Langdon circles away.
Langdon now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Langdon scores with a jab. Smart acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Langdon has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Langdon jabs Smart right on the nose. Smart blinks but takes it well.
Langdon has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Smart cracks Langdon with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Langdon fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Smart to the ground. Langdon is now in Smart's guard.

Smart is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Smart connects with a nice short shot to Langdon's temple.
Smart lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Langdon tries to get to full guard but Smart has control of the leg.
Smart working over Langdon with some ground and pound. Langdon looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Langdon manages to get to full guard.

Langdon is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Smart defends well.
Smart makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Smart in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Peter Smart has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Smart is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Smart chips away with some ground and pound.
Jock Langdon has got the better of the ground game so far.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Smart accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Langdon is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Jock Langdon is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Smart cracks Langdon with a solid left hand.

Smart throws a strike but Langdon rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Smart tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Smart is trying to control the position but Langdon postures up.

Smart wants to hit a sweep here but Langdon passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Smart there!
Langdon has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Smart's face.

Jock Langdon comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Langdon has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
