PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jack Wolf (ranked 4325 p4p, 4760 weight class) and Ponzio Pilato (ranked 505 p4p, 535 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jack Wolf!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ponzio Pilato!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Chris Saunders and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pilato pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A head kick misses from Wolf.
Pilato changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Pilato takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Pilato avoids a punch combination nicely.
Pilato connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Wolf momentarily.
A lazy left from Pilato finds it's target.
Pilato looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Wolf is fending him off so far but Pilato persists. Nope, Wolf circles away and we're back to standing.
Wolf chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Pilato fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Wolf throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Wolf fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Wolf pushes Pilato away with a front kick.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Wolf misses with a few strikes there.
Pilato is looking to clinch but Wolf is avoiding it.
Wolf throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Pilato sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Wolf looks to land a left hand but Pilato moved out of range nicely.
Pilato changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Wolf swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Wolf clinches.
Pilato tries to break the clinch but Wolf is controlling the position.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Wolf obliges.

Wolf is pushing Pilato up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Wolf gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Pilato.
Jack Wolf has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ponzio Pilato.

Pilato wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Come on Wolf - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Wolf throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Pilato blocks it with crossed arms.

Wolf escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Pilato jumps guard but Wolf stands there with Pilato around his waist. Pilato gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Pilato drops down looking for an ankle pick but Wolf pulls his leg out and moves away.
Pilato is looking to clinch but Wolf is avoiding it.
Wolf throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Pilato will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Pilato tries to clinch up but Wolf circles away and keeps his distance.
Pilato shoots in for a takedown but Wolf shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Wolf wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Wolf swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Wolf gets a clinch.

Pilato pulls Wolf into guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wolf seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Pilato doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Pilato not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Wolf stands up over Pilato, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Wolf is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Wolf got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pilato has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Wolf has managed to get both his arms back between Pilato's legs - danger averted.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Wolf throws a quick counter head kick but Pilato was just out of range.

Pilato takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Pilato tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Wolf swivels and escapes.
Jack Wolf has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ponzio Pilato.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pilato throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Wolf feinted there with a counter leg kick.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Wolf lands a glancing blow to the side of Pilato's head.

Pilato shoots in but Wolf avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Pilato is breathing heavily.
Wolf just misses with a punch to the body.

Wolf has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.
The referee is keeping an eye on Wolf - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Wolf doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Pilato jumps guard and drags Wolf to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Wolf loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pilato looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Pilato can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Wolf controls the pace.
Wolf wants to pass the guard but Pilato is keeping the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A combination from Wolf does no damage.
Wolf moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Wolf lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Nice body kick there by Wolf.
Pilato ducks under a wild hook from Wolf.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Wolf moves out of range of the strikes.
Wolf lands a nice leg kick that just misses Pilato's sensitive parts.

Pilato shoots in for a takedown but Wolf shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Wolf takes the fight into the clinch.
Wolf keeps control of Pilato as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Wolf thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Pilato if he has to take too many more of those.

Pilato takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Nice body kick from Wolf.
Crunch! Wolf slams his shin into Pilato's torso.

Wolf clinches with his opponent.

Wolf breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Pilato closes the distance and clinches up with Wolf, looking for a takedown. Pilato pushes Wolf against the cage but Wolf circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Wolf is looking to counter the offense by Pilato and move into the clinch.
Pilato takes a kick to the side of the head.

Wolf moves into the clinch.
The referee is keeping an eye on Wolf - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Wolf just leaning against Pilato, taking a breather.
Wolf lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Pilato backwards.
Pilato is trying to push Wolf away but Wolf has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Wolf creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pilato can't break the clinch.
Wolf crunches a lovely knee into Pilato's ribcage.

Pilato takes a shot to the head.

Pilato has developed a nice purple lump on his ribcage, as a result of some heavy body kicks from Wolf.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
The ref breaks the fighters up, due to lack of action by Jack Wolf.
Pilato misses with a jab, cross combination.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Wolf - that will leave a mark!
Pilato's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.

Pilato tries to keep at a distance but Wolf has taken the fight into the clinch.
Wolf lands with a left to the head.
Pilato takes a knee to the side of the body.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Pilato blocking some punches.
Wolf crunches a lovely knee into Pilato's ribcage.
Wolf is stalling here.
Wolf is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Pilato can do to turn this around?
Wolf lands a left hand.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jack Wolf showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Wolf, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
