PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jan Sobieski (ranked 808 p4p, 1035 weight class) and Mike Holmes Jr (ranked 123 p4p, 151 weight class). Sobieski comes to the cage accompanied by Karnivool - Lifelike. The crowd seem to be enjoying Holmes Jr's choice of entrance music: Red - Damage. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jan Sobieski!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Holmes Jr!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sobieski gets the takedown into side control.
Sobieski working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Sobieski tries to move to mount but Holmes Jr blocks the move with his legs.
Holmes Jr is trying to get back to half guard.
Holmes Jr dodges the ground and pound from Sobieski.
Sobieski in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Holmes Jr struggling a bit here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sobieski has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Sobieski staying calm.
Sobieski lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Sobieski misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Holmes Jr tries to buck Sobieski off but Sobieski is having none of it.
An elbow from Sobieski crashes against the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Holmes Jr regains half guard.

Holmes Jr moves into full guard.
Sobieski sitting in guard here, content to control.
Sobieski wants to pass the guard but Holmes Jr is keeping the position.
Sobieski is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Sobieski wants to control from the top but Holmes Jr keeps moving.
Sobieski looking to sit in guard and control but Holmes Jr gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Sobieski looking for a sweep. Not yet Sobieski, not yet.
Sobieski has control of Holmes Jr's left arm, preventing Holmes Jr from doing any damage.
Holmes Jr trying to control the position from guard on top but Sobieski is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Sobieski keeping moving, preventing Holmes Jr from controlling successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sobieski pulls Holmes Jr in close to prevent any damage.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Sobieski just misses with a punch to the body.
Holmes Jr throws out a counter right but Sobieski avoids it with no problem.
Sobieski misses with a takedown attempt - Holmes Jr sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Holmes Jr flicks out a counter leg kick but Sobieski steps away.
Sobieski throws a poor cross that misses
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sobieski lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Holmes Jr circles away quickly and effectively.
Sobieski throws a lazy body kick
and Holmes Jr counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Sobieski thinking.
Holmes Jr blocks a low kick nicely.
Holmes Jr throws a big counter head kick but Sobieski avoids it with no problem.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jan Sobieski dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Sobieski shoots and misses

and Holmes Jr counters with a crisp one two that drops Sobieski! Holmes Jr thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Sobieski to his feet! Sobieski is in big trouble!

Sobieski is rocked!
Holmes Jr displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sobieski.
Oh Sobieski is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Sobieski shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Holmes Jr counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jan Sobieski. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sobieski throws a right hand that misses
and Holmes Jr rattles Sobieski with a well-timed uppercut counter. - Sobieski tries to back away and recover but his hands are down low and he gets tagged again, sending him stumbling down to the canvas. Holmes Jr dives in after him and quickly finishes the job with a trio of brutal punches, leaving Sobieski stiff and motionless on the mat!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:18 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Mike Holmes Jr!
A relieved looking Mike Holmes Jr thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
