PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Herbert Mullin (ranked 616 p4p, 1706 weight class) and Steven Petersen (ranked 14 p4p, 63 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Herbert Mullin has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Herbert Mullin seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Herbert Mullin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Steven Petersen!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Gwen Towbar and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mullin throws a looping overhand right but Petersen ducks down to avoid it.
Petersen lands with an uppercut that bounces Mullin off the cage and back into range.
Mullin slips under a jab.
An attempted straight right counter from Mullin misses the target.
Petersen feints and then cracks Mullin's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Mullin down.
Mullin works Petersen's body with a nice hook.
A left and a right from Petersen both land. Nice combination.
Mullin throws a nice inside leg kick.
Mullin throws a big shot that misses.
Petersen throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
We've been told by Mullin's head coaches at The Cave that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
A bone on bone clash there as Mullin blocks the leg kick.
Petersen throws a lazy uppercut
and Mullin counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Petersen thinking.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Mullin misses with a hook. Petersen ducked under it nicely.
Petersen wants to slow Mullin down by chopping away at his legs.
It looked like Mullin wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Petersen throws a nice looking combination but Mullin bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Petersen throws a sloppy body shot
and Mullin counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Petersen is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Mullin moves out of range as Petersen strikes.
Mullin misses with a hook. Petersen ducked under it nicely.
Mullin lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

It looks like Steven Petersen has been cut.
Mullin misses with a head kick.
Mullin checks the leg kick nicely there.
Petersen does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

and Mullin counters with a thumping low kick.

Mullin closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Petersen to the mat! Petersen manages to get full guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Mullin takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Mullin is looking for a kimura but Petersen is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mullin to get the leverage.
Petersen is trying to maintain the position but Mullin is very close to passing his half guard.
Petersen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Mullin content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Petersen is doing well to control the position and prevent Mullin from advancing to side control.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mullin throws a head kick that misses
and Petersen counters with an inside leg kick.
Petersen misses with a low kick as Mullin jumps back.
Mullin throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Petersen throws a leg kick but Mullin checks it.
An attempted straight right counter from Mullin misses the target.
Mullin takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Mullin avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Petersen just misses with a punch to the body.
Petersen uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Mullin.
Mullin misses with a wild combination.

Mullin closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Petersen's guard.
Petersen is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Mullin dives into side control.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Petersen wants to control but Mullin postures up.

and Petersen counters with a slapping leg kick.
Petersen thuds his right hand into Mullin's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Petersen uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Mullin.
Mullin takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Mullin misses with a left hand
and Petersen counters with a low kick, right behind Mullin 's knee.
Mullin throws a big shot that misses.
Petersen connects with a single shot there.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mullin connects with a body shot that sends Petersen's belly button to the back.
Mullin gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Petersen blocks the body kick.
Petersen moves forwards but Mullin connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Petersen pivots, looking for a leg kick but Mullin is out of range and Petersen settles back down.
A nice leg kick from Petersen, right into the meat of the thigh.

Petersen scores with a hook to the body. Mullin takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Mullin avoids the body shot from Petersen.
Petersen lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Mullin gets the takedown into side control.
Mullin is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Petersen will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Petersen can't do much from the bottom here.
Mullin happy to just control the position for now.

Mullin's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Petersen is looking to regain half guard here but Mullin keeps moving and retains side control.
Petersen looking for a sweep but Mullin has passed into full mount! Oh no!

Mullin avoids the attempt from Petersen to control.
Petersen really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Mullin has hold of Petersen's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Petersen manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Herbert Mullin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Mullin goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Petersen turns into him and now he's in Mullin's guard.

Mullin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Petersen is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Mullin slips a jab from Petersen.
Petersen lands a leg kick that knocks Mullin off balance momentarily.
Mullin connects with a body shot that sends Petersen's belly button to the back.
Petersen fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Mullin on the side of the head.
Petersen fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Mullin.
Mullin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Petersen manages to avoid it.

Petersen just misses with a punch to the body.
Petersen throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

Petersen is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Mullin.

Mullin tries to score a power double leg takedown but Petersen sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Mullin somewhat.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mullin is defended easily by Petersen.
Petersen fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Petersen swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Mullin counters with a head kick. That will keep Petersen thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Mullin is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.

Petersen's jab looks to have found its range, popping Mullin under the eye.
Steven Petersen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That kick from Petersen tenderised Mullin's leg. Mullin is trying to keep his angry face on.
Petersen feints and then cracks Mullin's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Mullin down.
Petersen scores with a hook to the body. Mullin takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Petersen misses with a lunging right hand
and Mullin counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Mullin lands with a nice body kick.
Petersen throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Mullin counters with a big head kick but Petersen shrugs it off.
Mullin stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Petersen with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

and Mullin counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Petersen throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Petersen walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Mullin checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Mullin fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Petersen connects with a leg kick.
Petersen takes a swing at Mullin's ribcage but misses.
Petersen scores with the left hand. Mullin knows he should have avoided that one.
Mullin misses with a looping right.
Mullin checks the leg kick nicely there.

And that's the end of the fight!
Steven Petersen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Petersen has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
