PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sergey Burenkov (ranked 1360 p4p, 1288 weight class) and Bruce White Jr (ranked 163 p4p, 154 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Bruce White Jr was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 9 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sergey Burenkov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Bruce White Jr!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
White Jr throws a shot to the body.
White Jr tries to move into range but Burenkov moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
White Jr throws a half hearted mid kick.
As White Jr tries to get set, Burenkov tries to push him back and clinch up but White Jr manages to avoid the attempt.
Burenkov fails to land with a series of punches.
We've been hearing reports that Burenkov has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Burenkov moves out of range of the body kick from White Jr.
Burenkov avoids the body shot from White Jr.

A momentary lapse in concentration from White Jr enables Burenkov to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. White Jr manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

White Jr is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Burenkov is controlling him.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Burenkov tries to close the distance and clinch up but White Jr swats him away and circles back towards the center.
White Jr looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
White Jr throws a shot from downtown. Burenkov moves away and avoids it.
A combination from White Jr does no damage.
White Jr drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
White Jr's jab looks to have found its range, popping Burenkov under the eye.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that White Jr has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Burenkov misses the jab.
Burenkov moves away from the strike by White Jr.
Burenkov throws a big counter combination but White Jr scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Burenkov throws a right and a left that both miss.
Burenkov throws a hook to the side of White Jr's head but White Jr sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Burenkov lands with an uppercut that bounces White Jr off the cage and back into range.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

And White Jr responds with a good body kick, but Burenkov manages to step out the way in time.

Burenkov wants to control but White Jr is keeping him busy.
Burenkov throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Burenkov throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing White Jr to regain full guard.
White Jr wants to get back to his feet but Burenkov is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Burenkov postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Burenkov keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of White Jr's head.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

White Jr utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Burenkov wants to control from the top but White Jr keeps moving.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Burenkov throws an elbow that misses. White Jr uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Burenkov's guard. Nice move by White Jr!

Burenkov tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Burenkov is trying to control the position but White Jr postures up.
White Jr lands a couple of decent looking shots.
White Jr must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Burenkov pulls White Jr in close to his closed guard and prevents White Jr from doing any damage or advancing position.

That was a close round but I would say that Sergey Burenkov will probably get the nod.

Burenkov drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and White Jr dives on top into guard.

Burenkov has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Burenkov looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but White Jr puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

White Jr passes easily into side control. Nice work.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Bruce White Jr showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

A big shot lands for White Jr! That's hurt Burenkov! Will he recover? White Jr fires away with more strikes and the referee has to step in to stop the fight!

Bruce White Jr decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
