PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Disco Kid (ranked 446 p4p, 618 weight class) and James Quin (ranked 57 p4p, 76 weight class). Kid comes into the arena with Wu Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 27 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Disco Kid!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Quin!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Donald Grub and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Quin throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
A jab from Kid misses.
Kid shoots in but no luck this time.
Kid misses the body punch
and Quin counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Quin throws a body punch but Kid moves out of range.
Kid misses with a body shot.
The fighters circling - Kid throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Kid scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Quin is not content to let Kid control the position.
Kid scoring with punches and elbows.

Quin regains half guard.
Kid is trying to control the action in half guard but Quin is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Kid seems to be working for a kimura but Quin defends the submission attempt.
Kid looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Quin with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Kid not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Kid not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Kid slips a nice elbow through Quin's hands, connecting with Quin's forehead.

Quin looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Kid is keen to just control but Quin is a slippery customer.

Kid is trying to work for a kimura but Quin is defending well.

Kid not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Kid uses his free foot to push down on Quin's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Quin.
Quin is desperately trying to improve his position but Kid has a good base and remains in mount.
Kid avoids the attempt from Quin to control.
Kid has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Quin's face.
Quin is wriggling around trying to escape.
Kid is landing with some decent strikes but Quin is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Quin manages to regain half guard. Good work.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Quin is looking for a sweep. Kid is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Quin is trying to control but can't.
Kid working Quin over with strikes.
Kid is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Quin regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Kid.
Kid trying to control the position from guard on top but Quin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Quin wants to sweep here but Kid controlling him for the moment.
Kid wants to control from the top but Quin keeps moving.

Quin trying to keep a closed guard but Kid is proving a slippery customer.
Quin seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Kid content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Quin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kid is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Quin escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kid gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Kid advances to mount.
Quin is trying to escape the mount.
Disco Kid overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kid lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Quin is in all sorts of trouble here.

Kid tries to control but Quin wriggling away.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Quin is trying to escape the mount.
Quin tries to hold on but Kid pushes him away.
Quin is trying desperately to improve position.
Kid can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Quin is looking to escape.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Quin is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Quin is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Kid avoids the attempt from Quin to control.
Kid trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Quin felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Quin tries to roll over but Kid keeps him under control.

Kid stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Quin swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Quin looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Quin throws his legs up looking for a submission but Kid uses it to pass to side control.

Kid has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kid lands a few punches from side control.
Quin regains half guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Disco Kid dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Quin fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Kid moves out of range as Quin strikes.
Quin drops his hands momentarily and Kid takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Kid lands with a nice body punch.
Kid uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Quin has time to react.
Kid jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Quin waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Kid.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kid moves into the clinch.
Kid tries a body shot but Quin blocks it.

Quin breaks from the clinch.
Quin walks into a straight right hand from Kid.
Kid is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Quin can do to turn this around?
Quin displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Kid throws out the jab.

Kid misses with a combination
and Quin counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Nice cross by Kid.
A slow jab from Kid misses its intended target.
Quin appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick.
Quin drops his hands momentarily and Kid takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Kid lands a slapping body shot.
Kid fails with the takedown
and Kid takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Kid swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Quin doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.

James Quin has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Kid throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Quin sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Kid shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kid working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Kid engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Kid passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Quin takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Kid tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Kid has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Quin can't do much from the bottom here.
Kid lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Quin down.
Disco Kid is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Quin is not content to let Kid control the position.
Quin gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Kid is just content to waste time from the top position. Quin takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kid trying to control the position from guard on top but Quin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Kid cracks Quin with a solid left hand.

And that's the end of the fight!
Disco Kid showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Kid has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
