PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Junior Silva (ranked 3042 p4p, 3576 weight class) and Dominick Poirier (ranked 288 p4p, 319 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Junior Silva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dominick Poirier!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Yves DeLean and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Silva decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Silva wants to lay and pray for a moment but Poirier keeps working.
Silva wants to free his trapped foot but Poirier is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Silva is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Poirier has managed to free his arm - good work.
Poirier is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Silva is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Poirier wants to control but Silva is keeping busy and won't allow it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Silva tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Silva has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Silva is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Poirier has escaped the position, nice work there.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Silva controls the position from side control.
Poirier is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Silva seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Poirier does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Silva passes the guard and advances to mount!
Poirier is looking to improve his position but Silva isn't that keen on the idea.
Poirier is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Silva prevents Poirier from getting the reversal.

Silva goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Poirier turns into him and now he's in Silva's guard.

Poirier can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Silva is looking to escape.

Poirier shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Silva is trying to defend but Poirier finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Poirier looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Silva regains full guard. Nicely done.

Poirier wanted to stand there but Silva had control of the position.

Poirier stands and steps away. Silva gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Poirier throws a nice inside leg kick.
Poirier tries to work over Silva's front leg with a kick but Silva checks it.
A counter left hand to the body from Silva misses its target.
Silva shoots in but no luck this time.

Poirier clinches up with Silva and pushes him back against the cage.

Poirier breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Silva changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Poirier tries to avoid it but Silva manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Poirier to the ground. Poirier escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Silva.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Junior Silva. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Silva blocks a head kick by Poirier.
Poirier shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Silva as he jumps to the side.

and Poirier counters with a nice body shot.
Silva throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Poirier's waist but Poirier gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Silva off to one side.
Poirier wants to counter with a clinch but Silva pushes him away.
Silva looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Poirier rushes Silva and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Poirier has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Silva regains guard immediately.

Silva is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Poirier is aware though and is defending well.

Silva has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Poirier defend it? Silva steps over the head and cranks it - Poirier is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Silva!
