PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jesper Knudsen (ranked 4612 p4p, 4620 weight class) and Abel Lyager (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jesper Knudsen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Abel Lyager!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Sam Margolis and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lyager closes the distance and clinches up with Knudsen, looking for a takedown. Lyager pushes Knudsen against the cage but Knudsen circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Knudsen swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Lyager dives in for a single leg takedown but Knudsen sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Lyager fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Jesper Knudsen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Abel Lyager.

Knudsen pushes Lyager up against the cage in a clinch.

Knudsen breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Knudsen shoots in looking for a takedown but Lyager manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Knudsen's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Lyager shoots in for a double leg but Knudsen sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Knudsen shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Lyager sprawls well. Lyager wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Knudsen gets slowly back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Knudsen counters by moving into the clinch.

Lyager pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Knudsen lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Lyager backwards.
Lyager is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Knudsen gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Knudsen manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Knudsen jumps guard but Lyager stands there with Knudsen around his waist. Knudsen gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Knudsen throws a knee to the head but misses.
Knudsen has Lyager pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Lyager manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Lyager wants to break free but Knudsen has control.
Lyager misses with an elbow strike.
Lyager tries to circle away but Knudsen has him pinned against the cage.
Knudsen drops down looking for an ankle pick but Lyager pulls his leg out and moves away.
Lyager fails with a takedown attempt.
Knudsen seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Knudsen feints and then cracks Lyager's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Lyager down.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lyager tries to score a power double leg takedown but Knudsen sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Lyager somewhat.
Knudsen circles away from the clinch attempt.
Knudsen shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Lyager as he jumps to the side.
Lyager displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Knudsen throws out the jab.
Lyager shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Knudsen as he avoids it easily.
Knudsen misses with a takedown attempt - Lyager sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Knudsen shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Lyager defends it nicely.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lyager throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Knudsen's waist but Knudsen gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Lyager off to one side.

Lyager moves into the clinch.

Knudsen manages to break the clinch.
Lyager fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Lyager pushes Knudsen up against the cage in a clinch.
Lyager wants to get back to striking at distance but Knudsen won't allow it.

Knudsen manages to pull guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Knudsen wants to hit a sweep here but Lyager passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Knudsen there!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Knudsen tries to lock up and control but Lyager gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Lyager keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Lyager fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Knudsen avoids it really well and circles away.
And Knudsen counters with a quick kick to the body but Lyager blocks it.

Knudsen shoots in but no luck this time.

Lyager shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Knudsen but Knudsen pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Abel Lyager seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Knudsen enables Lyager to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Knudsen manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Knudsen throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Lyager escapes and throws Knudsen's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Knudsen is not content to let Lyager control the position.
Knudsen regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Lyager.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Lyager is standing up over Knudsen. Knudsen looks to escape but Lyager dives into side control.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Abel Lyager showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Lyager closes the distance and pushes Knudsen back into the cage.
Knudsen tries to pull guard but Lyager holds him up against the cage and eventually Knudsen drops back down to his feet.
Lyager is trying to push Knudsen away but Knudsen has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Knudsen is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Lyager gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

The fight stays on the outside here - Knudsen looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Knudsen really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Lyager wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Knudsen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Lyager is looking for a triangle but Knudsen pushes his legs off easily.

Knudsen pushes down on Lyager's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Knudsen is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Lyager has managed to free his arm - good work.
Knudsen is trying to control the action in half guard but Lyager is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Lyager wants to get back to full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Lyager makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Lyager.
Knudsen seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Knudsen wants to control from the top but Lyager keeps moving.
Lyager avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Lyager fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Lyager clinches up with Knudsen and pushes him back against the cage.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jesper Knudsen.
I think Knudsen has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
