PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shane Vaughan (ranked 3553 p4p, 5134 weight class) and Seppo Ilmarinen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Shane Vaughan !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Seppo Ilmarinen!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Albert Achterberg and Aafke Stam.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ilmarinen shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Ilmarinen was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Ilmarinen tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Vaughan really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
The referee asks Ilmarinen politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Ilmarinen prefers to stall for the moment though.

Ilmarinen is trying to get an arm triangle but Vaughan is defending well.
Vaughan stops Ilmarinen from passing to mount.
Vaughan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ilmarinen on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ilmarinen slows the pace down.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ilmarinen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Ilmarinen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Ilmarinen wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Vaughan , who protects the arm well.
Vaughan is trying to get back to half guard.
Vaughan is working hard here to advance position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Ilmarinen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Ilmarinen tries to advance to mount but Vaughan denies him.

Ilmarinen looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Vaughan seems a little lost for a moment, as Ilmarinen dominates the positioning.
Ilmarinen wants to lay and pray for a moment but Vaughan keeps working.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Ilmarinen is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Vaughan is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Vaughan tries to bench press Ilmarinen off him but Ilmarinen keeps the position.

Ilmarinen content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Ilmarinen is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vaughan has escaped the position, nice work there.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Vaughan gets caught flat footed, as Ilmarinen shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Vaughan definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ilmarinen not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Ilmarinen slips nicely into half guard.

Ilmarinen is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Vaughan is just riding it out for now. Ilmarinen eventually gives up the hold.
Ilmarinen is trying to control the action in half guard but Vaughan is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Ilmarinen perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Vaughan wants to control but Ilmarinen passes into side.

Ilmarinen working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Vaughan being controlled for a moment.

Ilmarinen is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Vaughan knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Ilmarinen remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Vaughan is looking for a sweep.

Ilmarinen is trying to get an arm triangle but Vaughan is defending well.
Ilmarinen tries to move into full mount but can't pass Vaughan 's legs.

Vaughan wants to control but Ilmarinen postures up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Seppo Ilmarinen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Vaughan gets caught napping as Ilmarinen dives in and scores a takedown. Vaughan manages to retain guard.
Ilmarinen stays in close to Vaughan 's body and controls the position.

Ilmarinen drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ilmarinen jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Vaughan seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Ilmarinen wants to control from the top but Vaughan keeps moving.

Ilmarinen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Ilmarinen advances to full mount.
Ilmarinen takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Vaughan tries to lock up and control but Ilmarinen gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Ilmarinen looking to control and managing it successfully.
Ilmarinen takes Vaughan 's back.

Ilmarinen is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Vaughan looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Ilmarinen is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Vaughan is defending well though. Ilmarinen let's go of the attempt for now.

Ilmarinen has the hooks in and he's looking for a rear naked choke here. Vaughan is defending well but eventually Ilmarinen manages to get an arm under the chin and he's locked on the RNC! Vaughan has no choice but to tap now! He does! This one is all over!
