PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joey Woods (ranked 3553 p4p, 2496 weight class) and Murilo Figueiredo (ranked 450 p4p, 322 weight class). Murilo Figueiredo will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joey Woods!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Murilo Figueiredo!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Darius Henderson and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Figueiredo's jab looks to have found its range, popping Woods under the eye.

It looks like Joey Woods has been cut.
Woods closes this distance looking for a takedown but Figueiredo circles away.
Figueiredo leaves Woods with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Figueiredo enables Woods to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Figueiredo manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Woods in particular looking to stall.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Woods is looking for a kimura but Figueiredo is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Woods to get the leverage.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Figueiredo is defending against the submission attempts here by Woods.

Woods shoots in for a takedown but Figueiredo shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Woods is looking to take a break and control but Figueiredo is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
You can see the frustration on Figueiredo's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Figueiredo really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Woods. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Figueiredo can do anything to dispel that myth.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Woods mounts Figueiredo! Really nice guard pass there!

Woods jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Figueiredo manages to avoid the submission attempt.

That was a close second round but I would say that Joey Woods will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. And we move into the final round!

Figueiredo throws a series of punches but Woods avoids them all with ease.

Woods closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Woods thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Woods has hold of Figueiredo's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Figueiredo seems comfortable defending it but Woods has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Figueiredo is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Figueiredo is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Woods couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:17 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Joey Woods!
A very excited looking Joey Woods made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
