SFL 49 | Simon vs O'Neil PBP Commentary



The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
O'Neil misses with a leg kick.
A bone on bone clash there as Simon blocks the leg kick.
O'Neil misses with an uppercut. Simon saw that one coming.
O'Neil throws a head kick but Simon moves out of range.
Simon swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Simon ducks under a wild hook from O'Neil.
Simon tries to counter with a takedown but O'Neil is quick to defend against it.
O'Neil throws a looping overhand right but Simon ducks down to avoid it.
Simon shoots and misses
and O'Neil counters with a big head kick but Simon shrugs it off.
O'Neil misses the jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
O'Neil lands with a right hand.
Simon fails to land the takedown.

O'Neil misses with a hook.
O'Neil is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Simon.
Simon ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from O'Neil. Simon shrugs it off though.

Simon shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Simon manages to get an easy takedown there - catching O'Neil on his heels. He'll look to pass O'Neil's guard now, I'm sure.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Simon looking to sit in guard and control but O'Neil gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Jay Simon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Simon is trying to keep O'Neil in close.

Simon isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. O'Neil stacks Simon on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by O'Neil!

Simon is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because O'Neil is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
O'Neil is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Simon wants to pass the guard but O'Neil is defending well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Simon is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Mickey O'Neil showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

O'Neil felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Simon is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.

Simon stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. O'Neil swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Simon on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
O'Neil thuds his right hand into Simon's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
O'Neil lands a glancing blow to the side of Simon's head.
Simon scores with a sloppy right hand. O'Neil should have avoided that one.
Simon jabbing away but nothing is landing.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jay Simon.
I think O'Neil has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
